Overtighten axel nut = half shaft is toast?
Hey guys,
I just did the half shaft on the civic (97 HX), and overtightened the axel nut on the first try. The problem is I drove it for a bit, and then the inner shaft popped.
Is it toast and I need to replace it, or can it be re-set?
Thanks,

Guess I don't understand the question!
What do you mean, "...the inner shaft popped..."?
Sounds like you didn't have the axle all the way into the intermediate shaft, and it popped into place when you drove the car.

I did, but the axel nut was over tightened, so it pulled it out a bit.
When I drove, it popped.
Before I take it apart and fiddle with it, I'm wondering is it possible to set it again, or is it toast?
When I began tightening the axle nut, I checked the inner shaft and it was all the way in.
I know it's not in place now, as the tranny shifts w/o the clutch and the nothing happens to the wheels. This happened to me before on my 92 hb, but the shop did it that time.
Thanks,

how do you know you over tightened the axle nut? are you sure you inserted the axle all the way in? did it have the c-clip in place?

i was unaware that 97 hx's had halfshafts and over tighting a axle nut would not cause it to pop out if your car did in fact have a half shaft it could not pop out because its held in with bolts

Thank you!
If YOU can can over-tighten a Honda axle nut, you're a better man than me!
And, I use a 24" breaker bar!

This is why they invented a device called a torque wrench.
I'm a small guy, 5ft 6in tall and 150lbs, and it took all my body weight to torque the nut to the factory spec, with about a 2ft long 1/2 inch drive torque wrench.

Bah!
Tight plus two turns!
That's my motto...
Works on everything except drain plugs!

Thanks for the replies guys.
I was following what the guy said on honda-acura.net who put up the DIY guide on replacing shafts.
How I read it was if you tighten the axle nut too much, you actually pull is out of the tranny a bit.
I'll take it back apart today and check on the inner shift to make sure it's set.
Thanks.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to say thanks again. I got it up and the wheel off and noticed the inner shaft was recessed out about a 1/8 of an inch, and I missed it when I was checking it out before I put it back together. That's how I "over tightened" the axle nut (poked out more than it should). Ya'lls was right about not being able to "over tighten" it.
I got the shaft out, greased it up, and got it in all the way. Put it back together and drove it around w/o problems. Give it a couple days before I dimple the axle nut and slap the cap back on the wheel.
Thanks again,

Re: (mohater)
Got mine fixed as well...
I removed my left axle and spent about an hour checking things out - but everything looked fine.
Then I set the axles on the workbench, upright, side-by-side - hello?!?!?
I cleaned up the original axle, reinstalled it - and my CiViC is smooth as a Cadillac now!
LoL!
I wonder what axle AutoZone gave me...
All's well that ends well!

Re: (BlackDeuceCoupe)
I got mine from Murrays, and set them side by side before I popped in the new one the first time. They looked the same then.
I'll come back and post if it pops out again.

Re: (mohater)
it does not matter if the axle is abs or not if the car isnt, the "tone ring" or the "reluctor ring" is the name for the teeth that the wheel speed sensor pickup. reguardless of the shafts abd or not, the length and thickness is the same. you got a mis boxed axle, as the splining is clearly different, this may have hurt the splines on the tranny or the hub, and in fact in no situatuion can tightening a axle nut "too much" allow it to pop out f the tranny. the outer joint will pivot and the inner joint is what called a plunger joint, it allows for the change in length when that area of the suspension moves up and down as the car drives. in all actuallity, if the axle came out at all from the tightening, then when the car gets lifted up the first time on a hoist, then both axles would fall out of the tranny. if the axles are even close to falling out, then they or the suspension has been altered or the wrong axles. for your information, the front wheel bearings are whats called a split inner race, and you had stated you accidently left the axle nut loose, well this destroys wheel bearings instantly if you roll the vehicle at all witht he axle uninstalled/ or undertorqued. if the bearing isnt making noise now, it will soon. ovetrall check the splines that the axle goes into to see if its hurt, and or if so, most likely the metal is now in the transmission.

@ fastrc2
Sounds like you're 'on your game'...
Next move: All new axles and intermediate shaft (I'm running a '98 HX w/full '99 Si swap)
Any recommendation[s]?
HASPORT recommends:
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">90-93 Integra axles, 94 up Integra axles, 94-97 Del Sol VTEC axles or 99-00 Civic Si axles.
Note: The intermediate shaft seal in the left side of the transmission is different for 90-93 Integra axles.
Depending on axle transmission combo, it may have to be changed.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Sound like a plan to you?

Re: (BlackDeuceCoupe)
thank you for the compliment, i all honesty i drive a 98 hx, [ which is the best thing i have ever owned or driven] and i am a techniction for a mercedes benz dealer. i am not trying to brag, just stating my qualifications. now i see no need to replace the intermediate shaft, unless it was damaged by any of the splines stripping, if it was involved. if it was involved at all it is better safe than sorry to replace it. i do not know the individual needs as to which cross referenced parts will work for your swapped front end. i have dealt only mainly with oem equipped vehicles. i would reccomend investigating the wheel bearing still, as it may have been damaged.
