Default OK kids help me decide.....b18c5 block or Toda spec A's

OK i have a 2000 Civic Si with I/H/E.
I am trying to decide whether to get a new C5 block (stock) and slap in there or get some Toda Spec A's and all the stuff to make them work correctly.

I figure both will cost about the same just trying to decide which will give be the most power.

Any thoughts?

Just rebuild your block to where its better than type r.

the the b18c5 block will be faster then just spec A's added to your b16

But they defenitely arent the same cost, with the block costing more money. You will need an ECU, headers for a b18 if you dont already have headers that work on a b18. You will also need a new timing belt.

you dont need a new ECU when putting a C5 block on a Si, but yes you do need a b18 timing belt. I'd also put a thinner head gasket on.

Also as for the Spec A's im talking about everything cams, cam gears, valvesprings, retainers, ODBI conversion, hondata, and dyno time

Spec A's won't do **** compared to the ITR block.

More CR and more displacement will make more power than some very mild cams.

If you're buying all that valvetrain then why not get Toda B's? I know they're better for higher CR, but I do know a guy with 172whp on a B16A with Toda B's.

In the end that 1.8L block will give you more power and much more all-motor potential.

No replacement for displacement!

Ok, so going from 1.6 liters to 1.8 with higher compression doesnt need a new ECU? If you say so boss, sure it will work.

But will it work good.

NO.

a p30 ecu (b16) will work decent in most 1.8liter setups! Though a chiped ecu will work better ( check sig ) Get the c5 bottom end, you will be very happy! and stay awsy from b specs, a specs hold the secret! eric

hm.......let see

Option 1
New B18C5 block=$2400 (retail, unless you have hookup)

Results= more torque plus a slight higher compression and a slight rev.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Option 2
New Cams=$850

Valvetrain =$450

Cam gears =$200

Chipped ECU with harness (i.e. Kenji's ECU and harness)=$500

JDM 4.7 final drive =$480

Total = $2480

Result= one quick revn' B16 with more horsepower per liter.

My suggestion to you is keep researchn. So far your on the right track. Either way you choose will benefit you the most. But also consider what next in the future. Its nice to have a B18C5 block, but you can also build a normal B18C and still make the almost the same power as a C5.

Also, keep in mind those are just estimated prices. It will vary if you have hookups.
Nowadays thats the best route.

Yes i am pretty sure of the prices i can get them for, and i figure they will be about the same. And also I want to do both the Toda A's and the C5 block someday. however I am only able to get one or the other right now. The C5 block will basically be a install and Go item. however i will get some dyno tuning done with VAFC and cam gears after the block install which is a good idea after higher compression, etc..

so its either C5 block or Spec A's first
Currently my bro works at the Acura dealer, he can get some discounts, but i havent checked if he can get a C5 block any cheaper

i say get a B20 block get new rods, pistons, block girdle and new rod bolts. Way more torque than a B18c5.

True but still no tq at all, I say go for the b18c5, with the cams and retainers, and the kenji ecu. It's a little more but the bottom end will hold up after all the reving you plan to do.

go with the c5 with out a doubt...btw list is $2688.79....still worth it if you don't want to build the b16 (ie.sleeves, stroker, etc)

I would do it like this. Get the shortblock now, and then get some cams when you can afford them.

That is what I would do, cuz I am never happy with what I have it seems.
