Default oil consumption rate? possible ring issue?

my JDM b18c has always been a thirsty engine for the three years I have had her.
she normally burns about a quart of oil a month. but lately she has started to burn all the oil within about 3 weeks.. (actually ran dry once or twice, found out oil was gonna becuase VTEC would not enage, now I check oil daily)
at about the same time she started consuming vast amounts of oil she started sputtering when cold. once warmed up she runs fine..
I have had this engine for about 3 years now and never had any problems like this before.
someone told me that he thought my rings weren't seated right.
once warmed up I have no noticable loss of power just serious oil comsumption..

also note, when I am at WOT, she billows smoke out the rear more black than white smoke.. the p28 is chipped with a skunk2 chip so it dumps mad amounts of fuel so i figured the smoke was because it was running so rich..

I have put about 30,000 miles on this engine all of which were hard driving miles.

any ideas (other than a rebuild) are appreciated,

Your piston rings might be shot. But black smoke doesn't sound like oil........ You should get it tuned. Throwing a chip in isn't the best thing. It just, like you said, makes your car run pig rich.

black smoke= running rich.
white smoke=burning coolant(water)

do a compression test and then a wet compression test and compare

Number 1. I would get it tuned first. I would then do the compression check. Also search in here or the Type R forum for "burning oil" (not sure if yours is a B18c-r, or JDM GSR) and you'll see that you're not the only one burning oil. Check it every time you put gas in your car and you should be alright.

Good luck.

what is the best method for the tests.
I bought a compression tester.
dry test
unplug fuel injectors
take out spark plugs
insert compression testor
crank it four or five times
read gauge

how do I go about doing a (WET) compression test?
just drop a capfull of oil in the cylinder after i take out the spark plug?

also anyone with a helms manual please list the min and maximum values for my engine. it is a 97 jdm b18c r-spec 11.1 compression

patience with the noobi is appreciated..
