totally normal, like the other guy said....you shouldnt even be trying to hit vtec before the block is at 'operating temps'

Um, then something is wrong with my car, it idles over 3 grand sometimes when its really cold out. im afraid to start it up later on this winter. is this normal? how can i fix? all i usually do to keep it down is engage gear, brake, and slightly let off clutch so i dont burn gas unnecessarily

adjust your idle wit your throttle and use the idle screw to lower it down. that might help you out

No, the ecu will not let it engage untill it has reached operating temp.

Don't adjust your throttle if it's idling over 3k.. that's NOT an idle problem unless someone has SERIOUSLY been fondling with your screw.

Honda sets the screws perfectly at the factory. They should NEVER EVER EVER NEVER NEVER EVER be tampered with.. I don't know how many people I have to tell this to. It only causes more problems for you if you do this. Once you get the idle happy.. now you've bandaid'd it. When the problem comes back, you're wayy fucked off the map.

Ok if it is tampered with whom to you take it to get readjusted? my car is smelling like gasoline. lots of carbon at the exhaust.

Do you know what the hell you're talking about? A cold idling engine will have an oil pressure upwards of 50psi EASILY. When you get on the throttle it'll actually jump up to 90 psi at which point the bypass opens up to let the pressure come back down. Eventhough VTEC is operated by oil pressure, THAT'S not what keeps the car from hitting it when it's cold. It's the engine temp sensed by the ECU. With my Si at least it won't go into VTEC until the temp gauge is close to the halfway point.

yeah, i was going to say.. when the car is cold it should have very high oil pressure.

Just for ***** and grins and to see what it would do, on my sohc vtec with comp 59300 cam, i hooked a switch up to my VTEC solenoid and i'd start the car when it was cold and hit the switch. combination of high cold idle and big cam and it would drop idle to like 500 rpm and lope like a cammed v8. sounded pretty cool. lol

yeah it is normal for a Vtec motor not to engage Vtec when it is cold. Unlike the big block V-8s where they run better when they are cold Honda motors actually run better when they are warm.

It is normal. You should not be revving that high with a cold engine to begin with - hence why VTEC does not work until the car has warmed to operating temperature.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Apocolipse269 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Um, then something is wrong with my car, it idles over 3 grand sometimes when its really cold out. im afraid to start it up later on this winter. is this normal? how can i fix?</TD></TR></TABLE>
It's called a fast idle, and it is normal during cold starts in cold ambient temperatures. Your engine is trying to warm itself up to normal operating temperature faster. Do not attempt to "fix" it.

Oil pressure is right when you first start the car.. doesnt change untill you give it gas...

ever since i put on a header. my temp. gauge wont go much over the line above the C. would there be anyway to tell if the vtec is kicking on. its a sohc so u can maybe barely feel the vtec neways. and what would be the problem with the temp. gauge since it wont go much past the C. this is after driving for an hour. it wont go anywhere
