Newbie here! Is it worth modifying an engine with 156K miles?
Hello all!
I just picked up a 95 Civic EX with 156,000 miles on it for $1500. Its in great shape!
I am just wondering if it makes sense to build up the engine with such high miles. It's a D16Z6 that just got a new timing belt, hoses, spark plug wires, and fuel injectors before I bought it.
So let me know if I can scratch at this damn mod itch....
Also, under heavy acceleration, there is a slight vibration. My first thought would be the motor mounts but I am not sure. Anyone experience this?
I am getting ready to search some more but am also curious about the VTEC. I seem to remember that the B16 series VTEC kicked in around 6.5K. This does not seem to be the case for the D16. It feel like it kicks in somewhere between 3-4.5K...

I turbo'd my motor when it had ~135k and it still runs like a champ at 160k..If it was well taken care of it should be fine.

156K miles may or may not be a problem, depending on how the engine was maintained. It's hard to say. But regardless, you should really think about what your ultimate plans are. You might just want to do a swap right away. After all, you can spend a good chunk of the cost of the swap just trying to get a few HP from your stock engine. It would certainly be a shame to do this, not be satisfied with the result, and then have to spend money again for the swap that you probably should have gotten in the first place.

if your just going to add bolt-ons you'll be fine. honda engines are durable as long as you keep up with the routine maintenance. so before you start adding bolt-ons i highly suggest you do that compression test. if its good then change out timing belt and water pump since it pretty high on mileage. good luck!!

no no the motor is good and probably has alot of life left in it, alot of people turbo those Z6's so look at that as an option
as far as all motor Z6's, its more money and less bang
a swap would be your best bet if you really want a performace gain, do some searches here and read what some people have done and then get your game plan ready and do it

Re: (AbitAvenger)
my friend has a prelude that has 230,000miles on it and it faster than a jdm prelude. He is in the process of trying to reach the 200hp mark without vtec right now
I right now have a d16y8 with 188,000miles and im thinking of doin turbo on it.

as previously said, 156K miles can be no problem or alot of problems, depends on how it was maintaned and driven. when i bought my 95 ex the motor was fine at 72K, but after 20K of me driving it, it decided to go, however if i wasnt always hard on it, it could have lasted a quarter million miles. i wouldnt recommend getting a b16 as i did, howver if its all u can afford its a lot better then the D, but i would go for a gsr, or hybrid, which are well worth it. but dont let anyone tell you that ur motor is done just because of 156K miles. my 2 cents

HOLY ****!!! A BANDWAGONEER!!! I still auto-x my d15b7 with 152,000 mi. and no internal work. Like others have said, Just do a compression check before you do anything to help you decide weather to keep it, build it or swap it.

if i was you, just cruze around town in it for a few months and check everything out,if it gives you some problems that are more expensive than a whole new motor would end up costing you. than get a new one,if it was a grandma car modd that bitch.again though if you want a lot of power switch to the b series and turbo...but as a side not there can be had a lot of power with sohc turbo setups as well.just not as much as the b series.
