There is no SPECIFIED RPM. When you downshift, you'll need to "blip" the throttle to match the RPMs. The higher the speed, the higher the RPM since you're going to a lower gear.

I hardly downshift. When I'm going to approach a red light, Neutral it is. The only time I downshift is to pass someone on the highway.

Exactly what Dimi said, Rev match downshifting puts less stress on the tranny it's worth to learn it. As he said right before you put the car into the gear i.e. 3rd to 2nd hit the throttle a bit so it i'll bring the rpms up a bit so it i'll catch smoothly. If you get good enough at it will just be instinct it's all lil tricky at first but easy to get used to.

I agree with both of you ,your gonna have to match the rpm's so you dont put too much stress on the tranny nor the flywheel (which you wanna keep, lol) i simply put the top of my foot on the bake while slowing and slip my heel o ta the gas pedal and let the clutch out while doing so,good metho, know where i learned itt? Initial D ,lol

Especially when you have to downshift to go up the same big hill every damn day. Watching the tach, I came to the realization that you want to send it up about 650-700 rpm more than what it is before you start the downshift. I hope that helps.

Plus it also depends on the tranny you have. My DX tranny is EXTREMELY long so 3rd gear downshift from 70mph is ok for me since my 3rd ends at about 90mph. **scratches head** The shorter the tranny you have the less you can downshift to a lower gear.
