Well i crawled under the car last night and found that it has never been under coated. I live in Canada and winters are harsh with lots of salt. I found alot of nasty looking surface rust but nothing strucural YET. I was thinking of just using some old engine oil i have hanging around that I was goign to spray under the car as winter is almost over here and i dont want to cover it up with $$$undercoating. I plan on going over as much as I can with a wire wheel before it gets properly undercoated.

Any reasons not to use the engine oil?

Can't think of any reason why it would be bad other than it's a bit thin so you may see some drips if you put it on heavy. An advantage to it being thin though is that it will "creep" into seams and areas harder to get to. Where as thicker oil spray just sits where it's sprayed.

I just got this sweet image in my mind of a civic driving down the road with the undercarriage on fire. Anyway, you could use some type of rust converter.

I used naval jelly on the bottom of my old CB7 in a few spots where surface rust had developed. It worked well, but you have to make sure not to let the naval jelly sit on the surface for more than 15 minutes or so as it is potent stuff. Rinsing it off thoroughly with hose water should do the trick.

LOL i never though about that. But I was thinking just becuase its thinner as the other poster siad, and it would only be untill i get the other stuff off.

Never heard of naval jelly before , wonder if i can get it in canada? is it a heavy duty stripper or what?

naval jelly works very well, if you leave it on too long it will discolor tho. I used it to take rust off a catalytic converter I had laying around before I posting pics of it in the market place section. Most hardware stores should carry it: OSH, homedepot, etc. Naval Jelly (R) Rust Dissolver Part No. NJ-1 80276 SKU 0-79340-80276-6.

the oil will drive away moisture but also has a tendency to attract dirt.. just something to keep in mind.

That might not be be a bad thing lol , it really bothers me that i know its there. If it looks like any other car underneat i have owned then i will be happy

naval jelly works awesome i used it in some rust spots in my coupe and it deff worked very well

and just imagin all the pretty rainbow's you will leave behind. it won't last any puddles or snow will clean it right off heard of people using summer chainsaw oil instead. your best bet is to keep it clean till spring then go after it. good luck
