Damn that is THE most ghetto battery holder I have ever seen .
Positive = red wire and negative = black wire
negative is typically known as a negative wire and grounds are usually something that connects to the body as to 'ground' the electrical system.

the prupose of the box is so that if any battery acid comes out or spills it will stay in the aluminum box, that cardboard box aint gonna do shizza, plus thats not safe at all!
