Default need some help with ideas for upgrades for 99 si coupe..

my buddy has a stock, except cold air and exhaust, si coupe b16a2... and well he's gettin pissed.... not to embarrass him, but he lost to a neon, not stock though, but still, and he's sick of the low torque and he was wantin to sell it, but talked him out of that... now to my point... he wants to know what upgrades will bring up torque and maybe hp as well... i told him turbo would be one hell of a start, but he wants a supercharger, but he dont have that type of money.... still, i think i talked him into at least gettin a turbo maybe soon MAYBE... besides a turbo or supercharger, what else can help???

An h22 with an h2b kit.

Or a k20a2 swap.

Or a turbo.

Pretty much his only options.

Which track was he racing at?

For money sake please please please do not advise him to supercharge the b16a2...when all said and done he will be disappointed with the power for the $$$$$$ spent. If he wanted to turbo the b16a2 I would suggest ditching the s4c tranny. Worthless gearing for that power band. But if it were me...i would tear the motor down, install ctr pistons, s2s2 (pro series) cams, springs & retainers, chipped and tuned. That is a very reasonable budget and it would not dissapoint. I would always like to have good power, and reliablity if its a DD. That is a more realistic avenue than what others would suggest. Most will say, k20 swap...turbo k24 swap....and so on & so forth. People never take into account that people aren't made of money. If someone had buttloads of cash than they would not be on honda-tech asking advise for his friends em1 build, he would already know what to do, if you know what I mean.

I can't believe you said scrap the S4C tranny. Still scratching my head. Please explain. B16's make all their power top end....thats where that trannys gears keep him. There is a reason its a copy of the ITR tranny minus the FD.
The cams you mentioned would be far too big for a 1.6 with under 12:1CR. Pro 1's would be a better choice but IMO still over camming a bit. Maybe TUNER 2's.

No replacement for displacement. There's sleeved 84mm blocks all over this forum for under 900. Going fast isn't gonna be cheap. And you don't wanna cheap out, you'll end up paying for it later.
B16s make a pretty decent power band on JRSC

The JRSC is a nice pep to a torqueless B16, unlike a turbo the boost builts almost instantly and is more usable for a DD application. My buddy had one on 6 or 7 psi and was making around 230whp. it was fun and quick.

EG, r u sure that CR is right... i just looked up specs for the b16a2 and CR said it was 10.2:1... anyways, yea he dont have money for the motor swaps or anythin... i told him to get cams for sure. maybe regrind cams at least and a turbo and pisstons... and what sucks is the club he's in is all dsm's eclipse turboes... he's like the minority at the moment cause he's the only honda unless they get me on... and they r sponsored by dsm graveyard so that dont help much either... so he also has to find these parts as well for a good price....

I was speaking about the post above me that said throw in CTR slugs. The 10.2:1 is w/ PR3 pistons. JDM B16's had P30's at 10.4:1 and the B16a w/ the CTR pistons is 11.8:1 or so.

you can run boost on a stock block B16 fine. They will support good pwer with the right tune and parts. 300whp would be a nice goal and easily attainable. Just takes some cash.

don't have to, but if he doesn't have money for a swap, not sure how he can afford a descent turbo setup. Gotta think about what all goes into it mechanically, electronically, and then the tune. Money money money money.

if he wants torque tell him he already has the head and to go online or to a junk yard...he can source a ls block for about 200 bucks n rebuild it with ls vtec kit for a bout another 800 bucks...all motor or turbo or super charge is up to him but ls vtec or b20 vtec is the way to go..me personally would go with ls vtec just for the fact b20's dont like revs unless they're knife edged and balanced and that gets expensive

I would love too see a graph or a video of a nearly stock b16 with those numbers...what do you consider nearly stock?

From my tuner I was always aware that s2pro2's would be a lil too big for 11:1 and below. I have seen them used in a few b16's w/ upped compression and it was all ghood. After tearing the motor down, and machining, using ctr pistons you net in the neighborhood of 11.4:1. I wonder where you were informed that those are FAR too big for 12:1 and below? And yes b16a3 and b16a2 tranny's share itr gearing MINUS LSD.....which were more directed for n/a applications. A bone stock b16a on 9-11lbs and up is pointless w/ the typical torquless b16 trans and takes the fun out of the car. Yeah some think frying the tires and hitting rev limiter in the first three gears is fun and fast but hey matter of opinion I guess. I have always preferred a gsr hydro trans if not a b18b1 in boosted applications, car seems more consistent.

A 1.6 w/ 11.4:1 CR is comprable to a 1.8 w/ 10.6:1 roughly. A GSR with 10.6:1 CR on pro 2's is overcammed. period. Skunk 2 calls for 1.8's to be at nearly 12:1 CR for those cams to perform optimally. A 1.6 will not put them to use efficiently.
As for the trannys yes it may be preference, but shorter gears always get you down the track quicker within reason.

thats dependent on tires size.. you dont see hardly any boosted cars running B16 trans for a reason.. gearing is to short

If your friend really wants more power and is ready to sell this car that easily then he should probably just sell this car and find a car that suits his needs and wants better. All within budget, of course.
