need opinions: exhaust
okay, so my cat is busted. a local shop wants $160 to put on a oe replacement parts & labour included.
so i was thinking, why not just pickup a magnaflow oval and carsound cat for around that price, then just pay the cash for the piping and install from the shop.
i was thinking 2.5" cat, and then 2.5" piping, to 2.5" magnaflow oval. what would you guys suggest? think i can get it all done for under $250?

just get a nice full cat back and a high flow exhaust, then slap in on yourself. that's what i did, minus the cat though.
Why would you pay someone to do something that is easy, fun, and rewarding?

Unless it's madrel bent, I wouldn't do the cat-back. Replace the the converter (since it's a really good price if it's CDN $) and save for a "real" exhaust and do the whole thing (header, cat, and muffler).
What are your plans for it, though? Do you plan on doing the full exhaust at some point?

no, its us dollars, so itd be around $220 canadian. i can get a carsound for $83 canadian to my door from ebay... its ridicoulous.
the setup im looking at would be crush bent, why mandrel? my car is a d15b.. mandrel for the extra price isnt going to help much. i could understand if i was running some crazy n/a motor, or a turbo.. but for a d15b, i think crush bent is fine.

To each their own (in regard to mandrel bends).
But the $160 is still a good price. I was quoted $250 for a new stock-like converter for my D16Y8.

someone help me understand what exactly he needs welding for? I don't get it. my cat is just bolted on... along with the rest of my rs-r exhaust.

yes, and mine isnt oem.
the catalytic converter i would be getting is a universal one without flanges on either ends. a flange then needs to be welded on and bolted into the header flange. the rear of the cat is just strapped on without a flange or weld.
a stock catalytic converter is double flanged.
