Default Need Help - D16Z6 Swap, Motor not running right

This is a 94 D16Z6 Auto Sedan Motor going into a 92 Civic DX Hatch. I just plugged in the motor, no wiring was done, was going to run it as a DX until the kid who I am doing this for gets up the cash to buy the rest of the parts.

Here's the problem I am running into:

When I throw the timing light on the car after it's ran for 5 minutes, and is warmed up....I get only 9~10 BTDC when a dial in the light. It's supposed to be at 16 BTDC if I'm not correct.

I can't rotate the distributor back any further to get to 16 (nor should I have to).

So I took off the timing belt cover and with a 17mm, turned the crank pulley till the rightmost white mark was lined up with the cover sight-marks, and the camshaft sprocket's line were even with the top of the head....???? It should be in mechanical time, but why is it only reading 9 BTDC?

It's something to do with the timing. I've tried to Z6 Distirbutors, a P28 ECU, the original DX ECU, new plugs gapped to 43 thousandths, two sets of Z6 plug wires, that should be everything that could possibly be related.

I even swapped out the Z6 injectors for the old DX D15B7 injectors.

I am going off common sense on the D16Z6 Timing Adjustment with the belt.....I've done work with the 88-91 D16A6 and it should be identical in theory.

What it's doing is sputtering and not burning fuel all the way on the 1 & 4, plugs are a bit wet, and the smell of fuel very obvious out the muffler.

I need any help please...I don't have a lot of time to work on this. Thanks.

Additional information:

I also am using a DX D15B7 Exhuast manifold and O2 sensor, CX or DX Trans, and 92 DX ECU, but it has a D16Z6 Distributor.

Here's pics on the Mechincal Timing...correct me if I'm wrong:

The Pointer should point to the Right-most White Mark

The Head should be level with both marks on either side of the cam sprocket

The Plug Wires should be routed in the below order:

And the Timing should be dialed in at 16 BTDC....I drew arrows pointing to what is compared and the line between them

What's I've done should be correct....that's what I'm going on...somebody verify this please?

If i am correct, I think your cam timing is off.

The P08 marks on each side should be used for non-vtec motors...there is a separate mark under and to the left of the cam sprocket that's marked P28. If its lined up with the P08 marks, it'll be off on the P28 mark.

your plug wires are off im almost sure try swaping the numbers like this
2 to 1
1 to 2
4 to 3
3 to 4
or try 4 to 1 and 1 to 4 one of these set ups should be right

My wife drives a Civic DX Sedan, her wires were a different firing order, wasn't sure if it was a difference between the D15B7 and D16Z6 Distributors or not so I swapped them....hatch wouldn't even start, so I swapepd them back.

Maybe it's a combination of timing and firing order. I'll try this tommorrow and I'll look at the Lower part of the timing belt cover for the P28 timing mark...It's feels like a timing issue.

Thanks guys

I took a look at the other Civic EX's on cardomain.com, they all have their plug wires routed like the following:

.......2
..4......1
.....3

Mine are crossed at the 2 & 3

.......3
..4......1
.....2

Can anyone tell me how to get the timing belt a tooth ahead without completely removing the belt?

Need Help again...wish I had a manual for a 5G Civic

I was looking at the D16Z6 Sprocket below, and I wanted to know which lines when to what?

The way it is right now in the picture, the 7-o'clock line goes to the P28 pointer. I would assume if the crank pulley is lined up and the sprocket appears as the pictue does, then it would be in-time once the distributor is adjusted.

I assume the P08 is the D15B7, and it's the two line across from eachother
And the P28 is the D16Z6, and it has that line that's on it's own at about 7-o'clock in the picture.

The only thing is, they look to be about 1/2 tooth off from eachother....it looks like when you line up the one....the other is lined up as well. Are they supposed to be just a few hairs in difference?

the reason you are only getting 9 degrees is because you are actually reading timing off #2 fire....which would put "timing off" it really is in time but you have the firing order ALL MESSED UP

you don't even have it the right order let alone in right spots on dizzy

Yep, it was the plug wires

I hate the stupid little things that always bite you in the @ss....running great, strong motor, it's always the small **** I miss

I've driven a 92 Civic Si Hatch, and I never remember it having pickup like this! And the hatch I just did and drove doesn't even have the D16Z6 ECU, Hi Cam active (just lo-cam), has a DX Exhaust Manifold, stock intake, and a 2.25" exhuast with some kind of aftermarket muffler.

The only thing I can think of is that this hatch doesn't power steering. And it's quick...kinda fast....but definately very fast compared to a DX motor.

Thanks guys for all your help.

ok, i know problem is fixed, but did you happen to put the car in base timing mode (jump the CEL plug) when you timed it? thats why it changes when it's warmed up (it goes into open loop). thats also why the timing appears to not change when you turn the dizzy. it's because it's not changing. the computer is correcting what you are doing.
