Well, im finally getting my 1st car. I planned with my dad to get a used 99-00' Civic Si. Im located down in So Cal. and i found a dealer thats selling 3 salvage Si's. The guy has each color (Red,Blue,Black) and the cars are salvage due to theft recovery. He said the cleanest one is the blue one, but im really going for a black one...either way it wont matter to me as long as i get a si, its all good. The black one has 69xxx miles and its up for $7200. The blue and red have around 75xxx-80xxxx miles and there up for $6500-$6900. Before i buy the cars were going to check to see if they been hit since my uncle owns a body shop and hes going to be with us. Were also going to check to see if the vin number on the motor matches the body vin number, oil leaks, etc. Any of you guys got advice on buying a used salvage car and what other areas to check the car to see if its worth buying or not?

If it has any frame damage, do NOT buy it.

Yes, the price is not bad, but realize what you're buying...a car that was stolen, stripped, and ditched all by someone who didn't give a crap about the car at all.

But on a positive note, salvaged cars can be genuine good deals.

id say hold off and keep looking. after alot of searching I got my black em1 with 63k on it for 8,000

also realize that when you do decide to sell the car down the road the re-sale value will be alot lower than an em1 with a clean title.

Yea, but he's getting it for cheap anyways... I'd buy a car with a rebuilt title. We fix salvaged cars daily at my work. We have a frame machine too. My next car will be from the auction.

If you're planning on keeping the car for awhile and there isn't any frame damage then I say go ahead and get it...the price is pretty good!

Just make sure to inspect the whole car before buying one!

Like what one of the guys above said, if you plan on keeping the car for a long time go for it. So long you thoroughly check the car (ie, stress or crease marks near the front frame rail/strut tower, repair on the inside of the rear quarter panel, idle is smooth and revs smooth, etc.)

$7200 is very high for a salvage title car considering thats exactly what the kelley blue book (kbb.com) on the car is for a "fair condition" 99 Civic SI. A salvage title car on kbb.com is worth a big fat $0. I feel that a fair price for a good condition salvage title EM1 that requires minimal repair would be around $4500-$6000. Anything above that would be a rip-off.

If you dont plan on keeping the car for a while dont do it. Your car is worth nothing to dealerships and most people are weary of salvage title cars.

I found my 2000 si for 7700 clean title with 80k. I'm sure you can find one too...I say keep looking.

Im going to end up buying the car. My uncle owns a body shop so hes going to be down with us to inspect the body if its been hit. The only parts off the car that were stolen were the bumpers/rims/lights. Im glad the motor hasnt been stolen unless the guy is lieing about it. I also asked the him to email me all 3 vin numbers of the cars so i can do a carfax report just to be on the safe side. Its just a first car so i really dont care if its salvage or clean title.

thats a realy high price for a salvage si. a buddy of mine bought one for 5k and it was pretty pristine. i sold mine for 6200 clear title no wrecks with 100k on the odometer. i dont see why people pay so much for them.
