Name that noise, win $10!
So I'm bored at work, and I want to play a game of, name that noise. I got a sound on my car that I'll get checked out tomorrow, but I wanted to get some insight before I go to a mechanic that asks me to fix something that doesn't really need fixing.
On a cold start, when I accelerate I'm getting a rattle. The harder I accelerate, the louder it gets. If I drive for about 5-10 minutes. The sound is totally gone, no matter how hard I drive.
Also, on a cold start, when the car is in neutral and I gas it. The sound is vaguely heard, but it's still there. It's definitely not as loud as when I'm in gear.
Name that noise?
Edit: I'll paypal $10 tomorrow, to the first person that gets it right.

If this is what that sounds like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7TuBUwi64k
It's definitely not that. On cold/hot idle, my car doesn't make the rattling noise at all. Only when I'm gassing the car.

Stock exhaust manifold? You know they are notorious for cracking right at the O2 bung.. and that crack can produce noises such as a ticking.
It could be anything, have a friend sit in your car and give it gas while you go around the motor using a long screwdriver.. applying it to the motor at different locations and putting your ear on the end of it... a makeshift-stethoscope if you will.

This is the EXACT noise it makes on acceleration, (listen to the sound when he revs):

But it doesn't make that noise on idle, like that car. Would it be due to the busted exhaust mani gasket like that guy says? (My car is actually quiet on idle)

i called the leak, lol. The gasket also expands when it's heated and the idle might not produce enough exhaust to make it leak by the gasket, so that could be why it doesn't tap when it's just idling

Re: Name that noise, win $10!
if you have a ratchet with an extension+10mm socket you can remove the 2 bolts that hold the top shield onto the manifold and see for yourself if it is cracked..
Did you also know that Honda issued a bulletin/recall/emissions update to some year ranges for Civics which entitled customers to a brand new exhaust manifold, cap+rotor, wires, plugs.. It might be worth while to call up a local Honda dealership and give them your VIN to see if it falls into that category.

I would bet money on a pin-hole leak in your header, or manifold gasket. It would be more apparent when cold, and wouldn't be detectable at idle. If it's the gasket, the heat probably swells it somewhat and it seals up when warm. And that's already been said, but it sounds good to me.

Re: Name that noise, win $10!
i have to replace the exhaust manifold gasket on my LS swap, but i got a new header so i'm gonna wait until then. My car taps at high RPM's (not loud, but it's noticeable) but i don't hear it on idle.
so maybe your problem will pay for my problem, lol. (gasket is $9 with employee discount where my buddy works)
