Name my head/TDC question
Bought a civic, cheap, from a friend who didn't want to do anything to it, and its turning into a project. The casting says PO8-3, from what i've found thats a d16z, and it has the lost motion deal as well. My confusion comes from the kid i bought it from says its a D15, so i have no idea whats going on here, logic tells me its a d16 via casting number, but then maybe i have some mis information. ON a side note, where the crap is the TDC marking on the crank pulley, FSM says its a white mark... Its possible that the mark may have been on the chunk that it missing (awesome i know) but there are two evenly spaces groves and then closesly spaced are three evenly spaces grooves. So, right now, i'm just going with other vehicle tech, that being the distrubotor rotor pointing to the #1 plug. Again, i don't know if that works for honda's though, thanks for the info.

Yea if you look on the front of the block next to where the tranny bolts up to it you will see a engine code and as far as tdc you can just put a long stick down in the cly through the spark plug hole and as soon as it stops going up then there you are.

good idea with the stick thing, also, the disty rotor seems to work to. Also, thanks for pointing out where the casting # is, i was having some trouble finding that on the block.

well.. I found the plate but i'm still a little confused, i keep finding contradicting information. I have a d15 turns out, only it is the VTEC version, so i'm at a loss as to what the engine code is. thanks in advance.
oh yeah, the service bulletin for a head gasket leak, thats a metal layer head gasket right? Also, and probably a dumb question, but again, i've found contradicting information, is the 1.5 vtec head gasket interchangeable with non vtec 1.5s?? or with the 1.6s ???

D15B8, but i think i have everything figured out as to what i need to order and where from, thanks again.
-----edit----
I did some digging around and found that its ok to use a d16 head gasket, or even better, as its a layered metal style gasket where as the OE d15 gasket is graphite. However, after further research, i found that Felpro also uses a metal type gasket, so i've decided to just to with their gasket kit, i'm sure the d16 option would work fine, but i just don't feel like messing around with it right now. On a final note, i'm note even sure if the service bulletin applies to me, as i have the VTEC d15... so i dunno..
