Default my d16y8 compression test results

ok done my compression test today at school...trying to see my numbers before i turbo...from cyl. 1-4, i got 163, 163, 158, 163, doing 5 cranks...is this normal or good for a d16y8?? i kno the numbers should be all close together...but is it better to have higher compression numbers like 193, 193, 188, 193?? cause one of my classmates confused me where he said i would wanna have lower numbers and i thought the higher the compression numbers the better

Yes it is the higher compression the better, as for your numbers they seem kinda low

Higher compression is good for all motor builds
Lower compression is better for mid to high end boost applications/ builds.

right, only issue with your analogy is that you are comparing compression ratio as static means, which is fine. OP used is trying to determin the mechanical condition of an engine, by preforming a test. we know y8 has a compression ratio 9.6:1 which does not change from stock motor to motor. so irregardless of what he or his buddy has, both are just as good for turbocharging.

now as far as OPs, numbers will depend on the gauge and many other factors. Basically honda states about 175-180psi as being optimal and 128psi as minimal, with no more then 28psi between cylinders as acceptable.

Those numbers are fine, the only thing you should be really worried about is variance between the numbers. IMO if any of the numbers vary more than 15% from the others then you might have a problem.

The numbers can change depending on if the car was hot, cold, and other factors.

I did the compression on my d16y8 and mine came to 175 psi across the board.

Like said already its always different between gauges, the final number isnt what you should be looking at. You look for how high the motor jumps on the first rotation, then the 2nd and 3rd. If it all jumps the same with a good hard jump then its good. Your numbers look perfectly fine to me.

try it out. I get higher numbers when I opened it up. Not much for the pistons to compress if they can't get air.

You have an engine that probably won't run. Not good.

You have likely done something incorrectly in the build... you will have to tear back down and check everything over to find your error.
