The turbo is going to be way more complicated.

in my point of view go with the turbo sohc..... i went all motor with jdm type r but got pulled over and they fudged me over for it. and now i gotta go back to sohc and go ref it;;;; and after all thats over with ima go sohc turbo.....ur gonna spend money on another motor and get pulled over later and gonna have to go back to stock an all that bs..... and atleast with the sohc turbo u can just take off the turbo setup and put ur stock parts back on and ur set... it wont cost u as much.. .. but thats just me... im just talking with experience of what i went through..

He isn't in CA, so I don't think this is a big concern.

To the OP: if the motor was built right and you know its reliable I would go with that. That way you can always turbo that down the line.

It is way easier to pass emission up her in the N.W. they didn't even pop my

hood they just tail pipe sniffed it at idle passed with a jdm type-r with I/H/E.

The choice really depends on what you're more comfortable doing. If you have to pass inspection or any off that emissions BS, you may want to check the laws before deciding on either route.

As for the original question at hand. I look at it like this:
-Poormans Type R: You'll spend about $3k after everything for the swap, wiring, etc. and net about 155-170whp.

-Turbo D series: You can still spend the same $3k and end up with 220-240whp. Toss another $1000 at it for an Eagle/Vitara bottom end and you're set to make 450whp.

In a simple whp per dollar viewpoint, the turbo D is hands down the winner.

Since you dont have a budget id go with turbo, but id do it to a z6 (far better oil system) and convert to obd1.
