Default Maximum practical wheel/ tire width, for street.

I currently have slipstream 15x7 +40 with 205/50/15 on my 96 LX (H&R sport springs -1.75" F -1.5" R). Is it worth going to a wider wheel/tire with more negative offset or is that a bad idea? I really want to put some wider wheels with more negative offset to give the car a better stance. I was thinking possibly +30 offset 15x 8 or even 16x8. Any suggestions/advice greatly appreciated.
