Which generation?
The '98-'00 Civics came with them. At least the EX coupes and Si coupes.
I believe there is a 5th gen map light too, but it's not a standard feature.

add one if you want one... I did in my EG, really simple and it works great and looks like OEM.

the one posted above looks a lot like the gathers map light setup, which is super rare.

so will the one from the 98 work? is there any threaded holes that are already there to mount after you cut the headliner or do you need to drill and tap?

Well, only the '98-'00 EX Coupe, '98-'00 EX Sedan and '99-'00 Si Coupe have map lights. These cars also ALL came with moon roofs. So I'm not sure if the headliner around the map light is different between the cars with moon roofs and map lights and the cars without moon roofs and map lights.
I don't know if the non-moon roof / non-map light roof skins have the proper mounting brackets.

off to the dealer i go! been looking at other parts sites but haven't found any with these.</TD></TR></TABLE>
I wouldn't go cutting a hole in your headliner yet. I'm not sure you have the mounting brackets as part of your roof. So I'm not sure how easy it might be to install.
Also, you can find it online. Just look up the parts under the models I said have the map light.

like the link Relic1 posted, if you cut the hole to the exact fitment, if not a little smaller, it'll fit tight and wont fall out.

It's not stock then. All Civics in the US besides the '98-'00 EX coupes and sedans and the '99-'00 Si coupes have just the dome light in the middle (and there are two different styles of dome lights which take different bulbs too).
