loud vtec crossover
Buddys got a civic 4 door, b16 with an intake and exhaust
I've never been in a car that pulls so hard when vtec hits... specially a mostly stock motor..
I've heard that people that have a vtec that is that aggressive means that the theres either a leak or that the crossover is set to high... Im gonna see if i can get it on video, but i know theres videos like this on Youtube...
Anyhow, hes not really worried about it, but i just think something's not right when his vtec kicks in harder than my fully built type r...
Thanks H-T!!!

Re: loud *** vtec crossover
Thing cracks harder than i've ever felt a 4 banger crack!
But i thought that it was a bad thing if you felt a sudden surge in power when vtec hit...
Optimal vtec, i read, is the kinda that has a bit of an increase, not super loud, but does increase... But this thing... gah... Ima post a youtube video up so people know what im talking about..

*judging from your sig* lol
Well, maybe, but his has stock cams and i dont really thing there would be a huge difference between cams...

Re: loud *** vtec crossover
The loudness of one's VTEC is more related to the cams, VTEC cross over point, and the intake/header/exhaust one has.
BTW if there is a huge surge of power when VTEC hits then that means the engine has a poor/no tune, because if the midrange is complete garbage then of course VTEC will feel maad crazy y0!!!
BEFORE my B18C5 was tuned the VTEC hit really, really hard and it felt like a completely different engine. People used to talk about how "awesome" it was, including myself before I knew better. AFTER tuning I gained +20whp and +20ft-lbs. of torque to the wheels in the MIDRANGE and guess what? Whilst the car pulled so much nicer throughout the entire rpm range, the VTEC "hit" was definately softened to where it didn't feel so dramatic as it did before.
Cliff notes:
Strong VTEC hit means crappy/no tune.

Re: loud *** vtec crossover
Is this considered to be a "loud" VTEC crossover? Note the drag launch and check engine shift light.
B18C5 VTEc y0!!!
I'd say the video doesn't really allow you to hear it, but at full throttle the VTEC crossover isn't crazy loud. Doesn't mean it isn't pulling hard as it dyno'd a good 35whp better than my wife's old B16A2 that had some crakin'*** VTEC y0!!! sounds. BTW my VTEC cross over is actually MUCH louder if i'm at partial throttle - does that mean I'm pulling harder at partial throttle since VTEc is louder?

Re: loud *** vtec crossover
yea, i had my h22 chipped with a simple basemap that took the surge out. vtec was less noticeable but it pulled harder throughout the gears

Mines loud and pulls hard for a few reasons. bad tuning is not one of them.... its loud because its singing threw a 3 inch exhaust. it pulls like a raped ape because about the time vtec pops full boost is in effect.
cliff notes:
just cause its loud and pulls hard dont mean its bad tuning

Re: loud *** vtec crossover
Noise does not equal torque curve.
Forget what you're hearing; it doesn't matter how loud anything is. Focusing on only the sound of the engine will throw off the butt dyno. You should focus on what you're feeling through the seat of your pants.
For a naturally aspirated VTEC engine, the torque curve should be one long, smooth pull from idle to redline. If it's not, and you're feeling a large jump in the torque curve after VTEC engages, then the car has been tuned improperly and is losing power in the midrange prior to engagement. And yes, even Honda's factory program for some engines (notably, the H22Ax, F20C1, and K20Z3 among others) is just flat out wrong from a pure performance standpoint.
