Lots of shifter movement - broken motor mount?
I had a 98EX that was recently totalled, only drivetrain mods were a short shifter and I never really noticed a lot of shifter movement under acceleration or in-gear decel. The shifter was on the car when I got is so I dont have any reference to the stocker.
I just picked up a really clean 2000EX which is bone stock and notice a lot more movement from the shifter and what seems like more vibration when in start the car. Is this likely due to a broken motor mount or is the extra length of the stock shifter just exaggerating the movement?

sounds like the shifter bushings very common with hondas right where the bottom of the shifter connects to the shift linkage

I would definitely say shifter bushings before motor mounts... I had a broken motor mount and the shifter was still very sloppy after replacing it... Getting the energy suspension bushings makes a world of difference... I could not stand the shifter in the car before the bushings...

a broken motor mount will have nothing to do with your shifter. i almost garentee its the shifter bushings. your shifter bushings corrode and wear out after time there just rubber. there the ones inbetween the shifter and the linkage 1 on each side, there basically rubber washers.

Re: Lots of shifter movement - broken motor mount?
Understood, but I would expect the shifter bushings to have more of an effect when Im going between the gears which is not an issue. This is more of the shifter assembly as a whole moving frowards and backwards in concert with the engine during acceleration and deceleration. A broken motor mount would in my mind tend to allow the entire engine/tranny assembly rock from front to back during accel and decel causing the excessive movement im experiencing.

Re: Lots of shifter movement - broken motor mount?
Ok lets clear a few things up...
#1 The civic shifter bushings get worn out and make shifting extremely sloppy... Meaning that when the car is in gear you can wiggle the shifter back and forth alot... It is like trying to shift a fish...
#2 broken motor mounts should have nothing to do with the way your car shifts...
#3 The shifter is attached to the transmission by linkages... It is not like a cable mechanism... You have something solid connected between the shifter and the transmission... Therefore when you step on the gas and let off you will see the shifter jerk forwards and backwards...
#4 Replacing the bushings with energy suspension bushings is one of the best bang for buck mods out there... The car is so much more enjoyable to drive...
