Default loss of power

from the moment i push the gas it sound like a gurgling sound coming from the exhaust and i have no power. it fills like the air is being restricted from the exhaust.the power comes and goes. then when i park, it feels like car wants to turn off but doesnt. i put my hand over the exhaust tip to feel the air. now i just keep smelling gas on my hand. by the way its a 92 civic hb cx 5sp. i recently bought it from this guy. his wife said he swapped the old motor, the 8 valve it had in it after 100,xxx, for a 16 valve. im thinking its either a d15 or d16 without the vtec, not to sure. sure hope you tech guys who no more about honda engines can help me out.

IACV?? Injectors?? Test the injectors to see if they are operating properly...you'll need a testor for both the IACV and the injectors...find the operating resistance and current or whatever and check it with the Helms manual. That is the best advice I can give without researching it. I would help you more but I am at work.
BTW: My car did the same thing and someone told me it was an injector problem or maybe the timing gears were a tooth off. Just my .02 cents...good luck with help.

Either too much gas or not enough spark or air. The possibilities given above are reasonable.

What's the block code on the engine? It's on the motor behind the radiator on the portion of the block next to the clutch housing.

When is the last time the car had a tune-up?

1 - Air filter
2 - Plugs-n-wires
3 - Distributor cap-n-rotor

How is your gas mileage?

Also, if the guy swapped the engine, did he also use the correct ecu?

i was thinking of changing the spark plugs this tomorrow. when the car is idle, it sounds like it misses and wants to turn off,then i push the gas and its fine . i think the resonator is gone cause it sounds loud and i dont have a muffler, its just a strait pipe all the way to the back. could it be the exhaust. like i said the air sounds restricted coming from the exhaust. other than that the car runs fine. the spark plug wires look like they havent been changed in who knows how long. the engine code is D15b7, does this engine sound familiar.

d15b7 = 92-95 dx engine

I would do the obvious tune-up things first...
