Does anyone know if your rotor inside your distributor is supposed to wiggle side to side?

The actual shaft it's screwed onto is able to turn a bit back and forth... Is this normal?

Is the screw in there tight? Is it stripped?

last time i changed my rotor, it was tight, and the only way i turned it to get to the screw was cranking the motor for a second.

the distributor shaft should have a bit of play. not much

If it's more than about 10 degrees of total play, I'd be careful. I had a buddy who's rotor flew off at 7000 rpm and detonated the inside of the dizzy. That's an expensive repair .

The screw/spring washer look fine, no stripping detected.

Does anyone have one of those car manuals that will say whether the shaft it connects to is allowed to have ANY free play? I would think that if it is able to move, that would change the spark timing...

So you're talking about the shaft itself, and not the rotor on the shaft? Then yes, the shaft itself will have some play or 'backlash' just as your transmission does.

I just looked through the distributor section of the Helms manual for 15 minutes and couldn't find anything about lash specifics for the dizzy shaft. A little movement is normal. A lot (30+ degrees) would be something to worry about.
