i have the same problem, but the cargo cover or trunk carpet doesn't get wet. Just a puddle in the spare tire compartment.

Strip your hatch interior, sit inside of it and have someone run water on the outside with a waterhose until you find the leak. I did this and fixed my leak the same day!

Check the seals around your tail lamps, then check your weatherstrip. Most leaks in the rear area come from bad seals around the tail lamps.

I found on my 00 ek hatch that it was leaking at the top of the window through the seal on the inside of the window then running down the glass (dont really see it since its also running down on the outside) and into the spare tire area. drip drip..replaced seal around window and all better. also check you hatch seal i replaced it after the fact just to be safe so could be either
