Default Largest Intercooler core size for EG civic?

What is the largest intercooler core size i cant fit in a 92-95 Civic Hatch without much hacking of the car's front? What is a large size that requires minimal cutting? Please keep the end tanks in mind. Has anyone ever used or considered a Apex or Greddy kit since it will fit nice and have half of the pipes already done?

Thanks.

I also have this exact question on my 93 Civic Coupe. I am looking at a core that is 7.5" high and 3.5" thick and want to make sure this isn't too big. What's the longest one that could fit in there, as well?

Ive read a few places that most cooling occurs within the first 2", so any thicker than 3" may just decrease effeciency.

Not sure of the max size though, I have been trying to figure out the same. Just have to go out and use a tape measure I suppose.

*EDIT- about intercooler thickness

the biggest intercooler isn't always the best... think about boost drop

Try the forced induction form too - you'll probably get more soecific answers.

Just up the boost

That is true, you could contribute to lag with too large an intercooler.

Are you using the stock radiator?

As was stated before too big is NOT good... especially on a honda... they're not to big displacement and usually people are only running turbos capable of producing 7-12 lbs of boost...

A big intercooler combined with the long route that the piping takes will create MUCH higher than normal spool time.

A friend of mine works with a bunch of engineers and he was talking about moving his top mounted intercooler to a fmic (he has a rx7 turbo ii). One of the guys sitting next to him whipped out a calculator and showed him how the increased volume of piping combined with the larger cooling area of a fmic would basically eat up his boost till like 5k and on top of that it would never run the full boost because of the pressure drop.

That much more lag from switching to a FMIC? Impossible. Please do not educate me with physics. My point of this post is to find out what fits from people with experience. I do not want to buy a intercooler and then find out it doesn't fit without hacking up the front end. Sure, a bigger intercooler will cost, but it is not as dramatic and life threatening as you are trying to say. Ask people who have changed their piping from 2.25" to 2.5" or to a larger intercooler, and they will tell you the change is only marginal, not 2-3k rpm as in your friend's RX7 case.

Please do not feed this board with inaccurate information.

it's not a matter of lag... its a matter of increased volume combined with pressure drop from the added cooling of the FMIC. There is a gigantic increase for a turbo ii to switch to a fmic... they have top mounted IC's with about 2 feet at MOST of 2"(at the most) piping... the IC is small too. Theturbo would be spooled but there would be LESS boost in the intake air then the turbo was pushing out.

I wasn't trying to "feed this board with inaccurate information".... I was trying to share experience. the difference in volume change between switching from 2.25 to 2.5" piping and KEEPING THE SAME LENGTH is not any where NEAR the change when you go from 2ft. of 2in. piping to 8-10 ft. of 2-2.5" piping PLUS a larger volume/cooling capable (you know temperture and pressure are *edit* Directly related*/edit* related right? (sorry for the physics lesson*edit* it's actually chemistry)*/edit*)) IC...

Sorry I can't answer your question though...

Good luck

yup, and it stilll hasn't clearly been answered lol... anybody else?

through my research...

-i've found that a 3.5" thick core, will not fit with the stock grill. going to get a 2.0 or 2.5 one.

-an intercooler that is 6.5" in height will mount to the bumper support, and just clear the lower part of the bumper.

-you also must get an intercooler with the outlets on the bottom (or top) to clear the side grills. (haven't heard of anybody with one that clears with the outlets in the middle.

you boost people, please chime in and help -- need info on the core and overall length

I am using a Godspeed intercooler and was still able to keep the grill piece (with a little triming) and I also had to trim around the fog light area a little for the charge pipes. If you could find an intercooler similar in size but with the inlet/outlets a little lower to avoid the fog light area, it would fit perfect. Heres the link
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...QrdZ1
You could go bigger but you would need to cut the bumper if youd want any air to get to it and Im not a fan of cut bumpers. Thats my set-up, hope it helps

I don't remember but i believe the drag gen 3 turbo kit for the EG is manufactured so you don't need any cutting
