Just bought a 93 Del Sol for $400 :) Can I use some parts for my EJ8?
Hey 
I just bought a clean 93 Del Sol for $400 bucks. The motor is blown but it looks like everything else works just fine.. From the VIN i beleive its the Si model (i also guessed by the VTEC solenoid 
, the block has alot of oil so i can't see the engine code ) Now, for the questions
The tranny on my EJ8 grinds when i shift into 3rd.. I was thinking about swapping the tranny from the sol onto my car, but my friends telling me i'll just waste more gas because its OBD-1.
Are the gears shorter than on my D16y8's tranny?? Or the same ****? And does the Del Sol come with a stock short shifter, it seems to have less of a throw than my car but the previous owner said he did not modify it.
I know I can rock the Del Sol seats for sure, AND the rear disc brakes.
Also, Would I be able to use the radiator from the sol? Mine is cracked
Would there also be a possibility in swapping the cluster? THANKS!!

what a steal... hell those seats alone are like 130$ lol
seats,rad,brakes, z6 on a y8 tranny(thinking what u got) i think, search should get the answer... or pm bense. he will know
cluster.... u have to put in the full dash.. alot of work, there is a thread on H-T about it..... dosent look right to me

The gears should be the same as my Y8?
And Yeah, The guy was going to sel me it for 500, but i negotiated ;p

IF you got the SI version, then yes the Sol should have a D16Z6, and the tranny is virtually the same except the Z6 has aluminum shift forks and the Y8 tranny has steel. The Y8 is considered a better tranny because of this.
The Del Sol didn't come with a short throw stock, but it's angled more towards the driver due to the high console than a Civic shifter is so it feels different.
The cluster could probably be swapped with some modification, anything can be done with money and time right?

Thanks for the informative reply I'd rather keep the y8 tranny then hehe
I searched and found a post on a guy swapping a Del Sol dash into a EG hatch.. Nothing on a EJ8 though.. I'll keep searching

everything in the engine bay will transfer over pretty much, including the rad. all suspension will transfer over, seats. Also that car has a p28 ecu. you can A convert your ej8 to obd1, Or B sell that ecu for around 125 bucks. trust me it wont be hard to sell it. Also the head you can sell. Or you can figure out what is wrong with the motor and maybe fix it.
As for your tranny grinding throw in some syncromesh. befor you spend the day swapping trannys.

Not so much. If you're going to base buying a tranny on making it easier to find out if a shift fork is bent or not, that's fine.
Steel is stronger than aluminum, plain and simple. Aluminum has a lower modulus of elasticity and yield strength so it will bend and fail sooner than steel will.
The more I read over your comment the more it doesn't make sense to me. Why would you want something that breaks over something that bends under the same loads? Obviously the material that bends under the same load instead of fails is stronger.

I just got the car today btw, I don't know exactly whats wrong with the motor but it shouldnt be anything serious... The car has 146k miles. The guy told me that the car just crapped out on him and let go of all the oil.. whats the usual cause of this?
The more I look at the car.. and sit inside of it, the more I like it, Its totally different than my EJ8. I definetly love the interior, I kind of wish it had a b16 so I can play with it

you want something in your transmission to break rather than bend. plain and simple. if it bends and you open up your gear box you have a bigger problem than just a shift fork.

With the syncro mesh you basically just drain out your tranny fluid, buy a quart of teh syncro mesh or mayber 2 thats your call. fill it back up, add motor oil to the tranny to make sure its topped off just in case you run out of syncro mesh.
Well if the motor ran out of oil then that would most likely mean that the bearings are shot (rod bearings). As far as any other damage done who knows untill you open her up.
