You won't get that from a single cam VTEC. If that's your primary goal, you'll want to look into the higher end B-series motors.

As for a good SOHC, the Y8 isn't bad and it wouldn't require an ECU swap. In fact, if the head is intact you could just get a short block and really save some money.

00 D16y8 is direct drop in. If you want some power B18C1 swap.

You know a period was invented, right? It's used to help avoid really long, run-on sentences.
But yeah, I think the d16y8, z6 or z7 would be decent

just go for a DOHC motor man. you'll get sick of the single cam within a month.

I've never understood why people like feeling 'vtec kick', a hard transition like that to me would denote an improper functioning engine and or a poor tune.

Then again I'm an uneducated fool sooo...

Long story short, vtec kicking doesn't mean you're going faster, it really doesn't do anything except impress you and your 'JDM Fanboi's'

Stock, the 06-08 TSX has a very noticable VTEC "kick" when it gets to 6k. Auto or manual. Pretty cool, but you need an intake to hear it, stock, you just feel it.

So with that said, get an 06+ K24a2.

ALL VTEC DOES IS ALLOW MILD CAM PROFILE FOR LOW RPM GAS SAVINGS, WHILE BEING ABLE TO SWITCH TO A MORE AGGRESSIVE HIGH RPM PROFILE SO YOU CAN STILL HAVE ADEQUATE ACCELERATION WHEN NEEDED. IT DOES NOT "MAKE POWER" AT ALL. Just increases driveability, by allowing dual camshaft profiles, the "kick" you hear/feel is valves being opened wider/longer wen the rocker assembly switches to the more aggressive profile.

its all really just for sound and bragging rights. im IMO ive seen some ls's and b20's (with non vtec heads) sound like a vtec crossover in high rpms

Then you're reading a lot of hearsay. Anything will have issues if it is not maintained.

d16y8, might as well upgrade the rods/pistons/head and slap a turbo on...

This thread is totaly useless if you don't tell us how much money you have to spend.

And Vtec is not supposed to "kick".

This is the tech section. You want the market place for a post like that.

Yes, the D16Y's can have oiling issues when they're beat to hell. Emphasis on beat to hell. Take care of it, and don't go hooning around like a dumbass, and it won't be an issue.
