Icon2 JRSC or JDM Type R motor?

I have a stock '99 Civic Si with 187K miles on it. It still runs good, motor feels strong and my mechanic did compression and other tests and says it'll handle boost. I've always wanted to get a supercharger for *added fun*. But I'd hate to buy a supercharger and everything that is needed with it only to have the motor crap out on me. That being the case, I started researching JDM motors at hmotorsonline. Probably would cost less than a "done right" supercharger setup. Seems like the only drawbacks to that are possible legality/emissions issues and a lack of torque- compared to boost.

I'm looking for opinions and pro's/cons for each option. I'm not looking for anything insane, not planning on drag racing, I just want some more fun out of the car. If I supercharge and the motor does blow, can it be re-built?

You can always rebuild if it blows, depends on your budget. Where do you live that emissions could be an issue?

jackson chargers in those cars are a blast. sound good, good pull, a blast to drive. A type Swap on other hand also offers great benifits. Too many to list on both sides. I would proabably do an itr swap in your situation just from looking at the mileage on your engine. Good compression isent the only thing to be looked at. Everything over time becomes me used, and potentially more weak as time passes. Transmission items, crank, valves, cylinders, pistons, piston rings, everything that moves basically. Keep that in mind. Depending where you are, a good JDM swap can be emissions friendly. Im in WA so its pretty easy here, not sure of your location and regulations

Thanks for the info. I am in IL. I just went through emissions, all they did was hook up to the computer. I have not heard any horror stories like the ones in CA, but I'm not sure.

i say run your current motor with the s/c. if it blows up, buy yourself an ITR motor and then transfer the s/c over to that for more ***** and giggles.

187k thats really nothing yet for a honda i think i would go with the supercharger i believe it would cost less and im sure you'll be quicker than the itr swap.

Anything over 150 is a good amount of miles. Most Hondas that are driven hard last a little over 200k. The people who hit 300k are the ones who drive it like a grandma and never abuse it. I would suggest you get a Gsr swap. A jdm gsr is a bit higer hp than a usdm. Closer to 180 I think. You can make up an extra 20 crank hp with some aftermarket parts. You'll have a motor that's faster than a type r and for less money. I would not supercharge it unless you rebuilt the motor first.
