JDM Honda SMX = B20z or B20b?
I have to clear this up. Does a Honda SMX have the B20z engine or B20b engine?
Here's a quote I found from a post on the forum:
"I can only get B20B's out of the Honda SMX in Japan."
I have seen a couple of other posts which say the SMX has a B20b; however, the "What Swaps Are Available for My Civic" post indicates that the SMX has a B20z.
Will someone clear this up for me?
Anyone here have a SMX engine in their civic?

Re: JDM Honda SMX = B20z or B20b? (t1g4)
and there are only four B20's
the B20A3 which came out of 90 and 91 Ludes(2.0 S model)
the B20A5 which came out of 90 and 91 Si Ludes
the B20B which came out of 97 and 98 CRV's
and the B20Z which came out of 98 through 2001 CRV's,
So i don't think there is a SMX or whatever with a B20

pic of an SMX and a little info. It's like a mini van version of the CRV to me...

B20Z is an USDM motor.
JDM honda only used B20B, which was available in S-MX, CR-V, and Step Wgn.
There are at least 2 major variance of the JDM B20B: ones with P75 head,
and ones that used a P8R head.

people, this is what i compiled from the jap honda site below a couple years ago. I believe the specs may be grossly incorrect, tho. And the link seems to be dead now.

Re: JDM Honda SMX = B20z or B20b? (CivicVX94)
Yes, I know the CR-V's have b20's.
An SMX is a mini-vanish vehicle in Japan. Look at this quote:
"THE ODDBALLS
’99+ SMX Japan B20Z 1972 9.6:1 146hp@6200/133lb-ft@4500"
The above quote is from this post: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=878010
Right there it says the SMX has a B20z. Some of you guys are saying it's a B20b. So which is it?

That looks like a Mazda MPV the older one and a Scion xB all together in one package. looks unique, but i guess it's whats in the inside counts huh.

i have seen no evidence ever that any b20z's were domestic to japan in my many years of researching b20s. Everyone said the jdm's are b20b's until you posted this thread (in my little world).

These three sites contradict:

http://www.vancouvercivics.com/honda_engines.php
http://www.torontocivics.com/a....html
They all say B20z.

I don't have the answer. i could probably find 100 posts on various sites saying that the jdm b20s are all B's. I think your best bet would be to get a '99+ b20 anything, to be sure you have the high cr pistons. There are people out there claiming to have b20b with those pistons. If there's any uncertainty, just make sure there's a knock sensor.
Why don't these sites list the b20z in the crv at all tho...
also, was the smx available in other countries?
