jdm d15b into 96 civic
ok so i'm having a lot of problems out of the motor in my car now. its a y7 block with a y8 head, 5speed. i can get my hands on a jdm d15b stage 3 vtec with ecu and tranny for dirt cheap, no wiring harness. so my concerns are; i was told i could use the wiring harness off of tha d16 motor in my car now. can i? and i was also told that i would need to get a different oil pump or something of that nature, is that also true? and why? would everything just bolt right up? and could i use the 5speed tranny in now with the d15? sorry for all the questions but never done anything close to a swap before and want to know what i'm getting into before i buy. thanks guys!

I dont see why you would need a new oil pump. if it comes with an oil pump and oil pan you should be fine (dont use d16 oil pan for the d15). I think you are good on the wiring harness also. Im allmost 100% it will plug right up. It plugged right in my 92 si. And yes you can use the same tranny. All d series trans are interchangable from what i understand, someone correct me if im wrong.

Without the correct ECU the VTEC won't be optimum. If the new engine has the CKF sensor on the oil pump you are good, if not you'll need the oil pump and CFK related parts from your old engine.

you can use your trans w/ the d15b but not the p28. p28 is for a d16z6. You need the corresponding ecu to your motor. 3 stage means 12 valve mode, 16 valve mode, vtec mode. The p28 will not know what to do.

lol that's what i'm starting to think. he's the one who told me i can just bolt everything right up, use my d16 wiring harness and tranny, and it'll start right up and go.

If you can get the motor get it...at the same time order that p2j ecu wrona linked you to on ebay.
Use your harness
Use your mounts
Use your trans
Use the correct ecu
Thats it
The motor will more likely than not be obd2. The 3 stage appeared in 95 being obd1 but not many of those will be around.

Rod/Stroke : 1.62
Compression : 9.6:1

Torque : 102 ft·lbf (14.2 kg/m, 139 Nm) @ 5300 rpm
Valvetrain : SOHC VTEC (3-4 valves per cylinder, depending on rpm)
VTEC Switchover : 5800 and 6200 rpm
Fuel Control : OBD-2 MPFI
ECU Code : P2J
Manual Transmission ECU Codes : P2J-003 (OBD2a), P2J-J11 (OBD2b)

see that's where i'm getting a little confused, because that's the only thing i've found on a d15 with 3 stage vtec and it says obd2 and different years than pandaej6 stated

Re: jdm d15b into 96 civic
You found your answer right there. The motor should be OBD2. Not OBD1. If the person selling you the motor says it's OBD1, then something is wrong. I'd look at the engine code stamp to make sure it's the 3-stage VTEC motor. Then I'd check to make sure it has two solenoids. To answer the question, it would depend on which ECU you run, if you are running the ECU from that Ebay post, then you'd need an OBD2A-to-OBD2B conversion harness. If you find the P2J-003, then no.

No...if it is a 96-98 motor it is a obd2a if the motor is a 99-00 than its obd2b. Nonetheless agreeing to 'b18civicej8' you will need the obd2b-obd2a jumper harness for that ecu...which imo goodluck finding the p2j-003. Jumper harness will be around $75. Not a big deal
