JDM B18c/USDM B18c1
Hey guys, ive got a question considering these 2 engines
1. I am really not sure which i should go for the jdm or usdm version.. JDM sounds a bit more satisfying over usdm.. but still im quite new at this all, which is why i ask yall to help me make my decision =P
I know the JDM version has 180hp and USDM has 170hp, and the Compression, etc..
2. How will i be able to like tell the difference between b18c gsr and type r?
i couldnt find any solid answers to this matter
thx

A usdm GSR is going to have p72 stamped on the head as will a jdm GSR and I believe a type r would have p73 stamped on it
Jdm GSR doesn't have all the sensor that a usdm does. I forget which ones they are. I picked a usdm gsr over the jdm. With the JDM motor you will still need to find a engine harness because the JDM is for a RHD or you could cut and extend a jdm harness to work in a usdm chassis.

Where do you live? What year is the car that it's going in? Depending on where you live, the USDM engine would be an easier swap. California and a few other states require you to have all the emissions equipment present. The JDM SIR-G swap doesn't have a CKF sensor (OBD2 relevance) and the intake manifold doesn't have a place to put the EVAP solenoid. These problems are resolved pretty easily, however. But with USDM swaps, everything is already there.
The disadvantage to USDM swaps is that they're bought from either junkyards for a RIDICULOUS amount of money...or on craigslist/forums from someone potentially looking to rip you off. You can find good stuff on craigslist sometimes, but if you buy junk...there's no getting your money back unless you paid thru paypal or something.
The USDM motors usually have higher miles on them also....and have 10hp less.
There are places to find nice JDM swaps for cheap. www.jdmenginescorp.com is a good place to look. I've bought a few things from those guys. You can then either buy a USDM oil pump to run the CKF...or just do the CKF trick for free (depending on your state's inspection laws). The USDM EVAP solenoid can be put on the JDM manifold via some creative bolting and line running. I think it's not an issue for OBD1 cars/engines, IIRC.

The ITR and SIR-G blocks are identical. They both have P72 stamped on them and B18C stamped on them. FWIW, P72 blocks are used for B18C GSR, and ITR engines, and on B16B CTR engines.
If the long block has never been taken apart and had parts swapped around, the best way to find out is to look at the head. The P72 head goes on a GSR. The PR3 head goes on an ITR.
Plus, the GSR has a black valve cover, ridiculous looking intake manifold, different exhaust manifold collector, and, if you have a boroscope, you can see the pistons stamped P72 in a SIR-G swap vs. P73 in an ITR swap.
