Default Instrument cluster question

I have a 98 HX 5 speed and it has a bad speedo. I was going to get a new cluster for cheap from a guy on ebay but he "lost" it so I'm back to square one. Since I really don't like the outrageous prices on the rest of the manual clusters on there, I was wondering if an automatic cluster would work since some of those are more reasonably priced. My Civic's cluster has a tach and goes to 120 (130)... One of my friends told me that an automatic cluster *should* work as long as all the other functions are the same. I just wouldn't have anything to plug into the gear selection indicator obviously, but as long as the tach, speedo, gas and coolant all work, I should be good to go he said. Anyone have any input?

Couldn't you just swap out the gauges from the auto and put them into the 5spd cluster?

I've got a 98 DX hatch (no tach) and have been looking for an EX cluster with a tach. Am I able to just plug and play the EX cluster into the DX? I'd swap my speedo so that the mileage stays the same.
Thanks

Well, from playing around with mine like I have and based on what I've seen of the tach-less clusters, I don't know if it would work or not. The gauges are arranged differently so I don't know if the plugs from the wiring harness would be fully compatible. Not to mention the fact that a car without a tach probably wouldn't have the appropriate wiring harness to send signal to a tach anyway. I'm not an expert on these cars (yet), just using common sense lol. I would say probably your best bet is to put the whole wiring harness from an EX in your car and ask someone who knows about auto CPUs what to do about making the tach functional. I know people put aftermarket tachs in so I'm sure you can do something.

JesusH ... a whole new harness? There's lots of info on this ... it's a plug and play swap! Tach wire is already there. 10 minute swap, most of which will be spent looking for your screwdrivers. Easiest, I mean EASIEST upgrade you can do on your car.

Honestly, I didn't do a search... saw the post and put it here.

I was hoping it was a plug and play... thanks for confirming. I've always been an Accord guy, so the Civic thing is new to me. Still figuring out the nuances and tricks. Thanks for the help
