Well me for one have never done this, nor do i know of anyone who has. I say just throw it all back together. i would imagine they say to do the input shaft to ease in the reassembly of the tranny to the block.

You can throw a little grease on the inner race of the throwout bearing, but if you grease the input shaft then the inner race of the bearing will get some grease on it anyways.

Re: (******)
I have a Haynes manual and it didn't do dick for me when I did my clutch.
You are supposed to grease the input shaft, bearing, and the ball that connects the TOB fork to the transmission.
I didn't know you wern't supposed to pack the TOB. Oh well, my buddy packed mine and we put it in. No problems as of yet.
