INDENTIFYING SOHC VTEC HEADS
HOW DO YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE between a d16z6 head and a d16y8 head.i want to know how to tell the difference without intake manifold or valve cover.

all heads have a different code on the header side. the code revieles the exact year and motor its coming from.

GEE ITHOUGHT BOTH THE D16Z6 AND THE D16Y8 WERE VTEC.THE QUESTION WAS HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO WITHOUT THE MANIFOLDS OFF.

They both are VTEC. The guy that posted above doesn't know what he's talking about. Look at the front of the head between the header and the valve cover. On the aluminum there should be a stamp. If it says P2J then it's a y8. If it's something else then it's most likely a z6.

Don't Y8's have the VTEC solenoid mounted towards the rear of the head while the Z6 has it mounted more towards the front??
