Ok I was wondering, my buddies car will crank up but it idle's real low before it gets to idleing like it should.. after a minute it ends up running right after that though.. just got a rough idle for the first minute..

How's the IACV? Have you checked the timing? Tune-up performed?

yeah the timing is right and it has had a tune up.. I was thinking it could be the IAVC but just wanting to get other opinions before he buys one..

he can clean the IACV. theres a write up on it. i'll try and find it for you

didn't really feel like looking it up lol, you can use simple green or brake clean. either will work. the screen on the IACV usually gets clogged so that could be your problem maybe. its easy to do and a lot cheaper then buying a new one.

yeah i've cleaned one before, but I thought when they were clogged they would surge..

I don't mean the cam timing, I mean the ignition timing. Do you have a timing light to check it? Also, what RPM does it idle at?

I never said that they were the best thing.. I said that they will work. And if you read my post on there you will see that I said it DOESN'T give a big gain.. read again before you try to say that I said they were the most awesome thing or whatever.

And no I don't have a timing light but I know how to put a car in time...

it idles in the low hundreds but after about a min. it stops idleing like that and goes normal..

You're telling me that you can just stare at the crankshaft pulley and say,"Yep! It's in time!"???

There's many things that affect idle - cam timing, ignition timing, vacuum, intake setup, maintainence performed, how badly the car has been beat, etc. Telling us that it simple idles low then idles fine doesn't really help. You didn't mention what the car actually idles at either.

if you look at the crankshaft you will see the marks where it tells you to put it in time at and yes anytime I have put a car in time it ran very well.. and yes i know i didn't put what it idles at, all i know is in the LOW hundreds.. it ran fine and then just started this one day.

Stock manifold, and it has had the tune up done regularly

Obviously there are marks on the shaft but you're telling me you can time it with the naked eye? Good luck sir. Also, it doesn't "tell you to put it in time." If you know how to time a vehicle then tell me this. On most Hondas, what timing mark do you use to set the ignition timing?

When you say low hundreds, do you mean 200? 300? The stock idle on a MTX equipped car is 670 + or - 50 RPM, which is reasonably low. Stock manifold, stock TB, stock air cleaner? Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, clean IACV, correct ignition timing, no vacuum leaks, no carbon build-up in the TB or intake?

I don't know degrees, i'll admit that, but I do know where you have to put the marks and I know it doesn't "tell you to put it in time" but you should know what I meant about that, so don't get on here being a dick, i was just asking a ?.. As I said before I am thinking it is the IACV.. and look again as I said I DO NOT KNOW the exact on where it is idleing.. he just called me up and asked me so I go on here and posted so if you're just wanting to be an *** to make yourself look cooler on here then go ahead.

I'm not trying to make myself look cooler, just telling you what you should be checking. Generally a lot of the problems with Honda idles come from a dirty or bad IACV, especially the surging or high idles. Might as well start there and if that don't fix it, start checking things elsewhere.
