Re: i want to be a honda/acura tech! (d16y7vtec)
well man go to a honda dealer ship, ask about job opps there, they train all thier own techs and get paid to learn, thats what i did,i asked and showed them what i had to offer, and they gave me an app. Umm as far as learning, just read every single thread on here, and in mags, and on the Intet, just everything u can get your hands on. plus ask around and see if u can be there when someones working on their cars, if you want to be a tech, ur going to have to work hard. Im 16, and i went to a direct dealership, (delon honda) and i told them what skills i had, because i got my own civic, and have done all work myself. I learned threw everything i could get my hands on. Honda-tech, is by far the most exp. ive gained. Just read every thread you can. Anyways, i kind-of impressed them with my car, because i did it all myself, they gave me an app. I still need to fill it out. But im wishing for the best. GOOD LUCK!

I went to honda school (P.A.C.T.) after hs. I worked on honda's at dealerships for 4 years. I would suggest you do something else. I could give you a load of reasons why dealerships suck, but i'd be typing all night. I wish I would have kept hondas my hobby.

Legitimate question receives a legitimate answer, if you have nothing to cooperate with then please save your keystrokes.
As far as working at a dealership, if you have the love for it go ahead and go for it. I have never been to mechanic school but I have buildt several engines done numerous swaps. Once you take a piston engine apart and learn about fuel injection you will learn to get your way around other similar engines.
I keep Honda as my hobby or like a member earlier said, once you do it for a living everythign else changes, you don't even work on your own car because you are so tired of dealing with them all day long. For me its the same, a hobby keeps the honda's in a very special place in my heart.

i work at a chevy dealership...im a tune up tech im 20
i like it now but i know its not something i want to do for the rest of my life
thats why i go to school at night
the more your educated the less you work and make more money
but you can make a good living working on cars but what TREVER was saying is all true
i think the worst part about all that is that people look down technicians
i go out to eat every friday at a resturant were buisness men go and get nothing but dirty looks
no respect... but then when theyre paying 150+ to get there brakes done thats when you laugh at them hahahahaha
and another thing i cant understand why people spend $2500 on there sound systems and tvs but when it comes time to do a tune up theyre out raged by the prices and refuse to do half the work
but its a good learning expierence
do it for a while and have a back up plan

"preludes" ......
LOL, im glad it isnt just me.
the sound heard most in my home garage " ping Ping PING... oops!!!" a few weeks ago i snaped an easyout in half, inside of a bolt that i blew the head off of on my h22a4 valve cover. i geuss there is only one way to learn the "feal" of bolt tightening (especialy if youve got a STUPID torque wrench that it calibrated in INCH/POUNDS)...
still laughing at myself.

wheni was 18 i was a porter at my local honda now im 20 almost 21 and im a oil tech and i have more common sense then most of the retards at the dealer ship!
its cool though when the dealer is making a trade for a modified honda they come straight to me to ask if they are quality parts or if the car is in good shape !
i even have my own bay to park my car in inside the shop because i have 2 bays 2 use but i only use one to work in the other is my indoor parking space!
its pretty sweet but i agreee its hard to work onhondas all day then go home and try to have fun doing it!
get a job at mazda or toyota then go home and work on your honda

Re: i want to be a honda/acura tech! (TREVER)
well you also forgot about
Hondas new products getting worse
the new V6 engines
replacing transmissions in brand new cars under waranty ( which pays us technicians less)
recalls on almost every car Acura makes ie:
RSX - transmission grind
3.2 TL & TL Type S water pump recall
3.2 CL & CL Type S water pump recall
MDX water pump recall
noisy suspension on MDX
RSX owners misshifting & blowing up engines & Acura still warrantying it even after they admitted it was there fault
I own 3 Honda/Acura products but would tell anyone who bought some of their new stuff to get the longest extended warranty as humanly possible

If you want to work servicing and working on hondas at a dealership, you will get in MUCH MUCH easier if you ask them to sponsor you to go through their course. Which is about 2 years (here in washington)
I applied for it, but I don't have enough experience to get in. It's really hard to get into it here in washington unless you have previous experience. I'm working on my ASE cert. and AAS degree, I might give it another try when I'm done.
I've learned that it's not that great being a mechanic at honda, but then it all depends on your training and how much experience is under your belt. It's definately not something you can jump right into. The mechanic I let work on my car works for Honda, but he has his own Independent Honda/Acura service shop. That's how to really make money! Drives an NSX daily, and some sweeeeeeeeet bike. He says it's definately hard work though, he has to manage his business aswell..

Re: i want to be a honda/acura tech! (Nameless)
I was sponsored by honda world when I went through the program. I got in right after HS and was working in a dealer 3 months after HS grad. as a $6 an hour lubetech. After I finished the program I was ready to go on the line I requested $12 per flat hour and was given $9 after getting rave reviews from my trainer (the master mechanic) and the foremen. I called some friends from honda school and was offered a job at costa mesa honda for $13. so I rolled my box and got my raise. I had to do this about every 6 months to continue getting pay increases. after 4 years I realized it was not worth it. The mechanic that trained me started working in dealers in 1988 at the age of 18. His first year he made 60k, not bad at all. his last year at a honda dealer he made 60k. He had to work twice has hard to make the same cash with 12 years of exp. and when you figure in inflation it was costing him money ever year. We both got fed up and walked out in 2000 with no regrets.
If your set on doing it go to honda school (pact). Of the people that graduated with me (22) I think there's maybe 2 still working at dealerships. When I left I'd say maybe 10% of the techs were happy with there jobs

Damm it's really that bad huh. I guess I'll reconsider. I was thinking about going like a year ago, but better oportunities have come up. That's a surprise.
