i smell gas from the tailpipe. i think am running rich and idle issue HELP
my car is a 99 civic hatch with a obd1 conversion on it. it has a d15b vtec in it. i dont know a way i finding what the problem why my motor isn't running right. i can't check the ecu my light doesn't even show i think the wires in the cluster is wrong. i smell gas from the tailpipe and it is also black. i was reading it could be either my map sensor or my o2 sensor going bad. alright my idle issue. so i clean up my iacv and it still idles weird up and down. and now on cold start up the idle is also weird up and down. help me to get my motor running good. thanks for any tips. any questions ask away

Your 99 civic, if it wasnt the EX, used a 3-wire IACv stock, vs ALL other obd1 motors, that use the standard 2-wire. Unless you've confronted that issue or worked it out correctly, your going to have that idle issue. oTherwise your IAC needs replacing.
Sounds like your running way too rich, with black soot gathering like that.
Make sure MAP and primary 02 sensors are functioning correctly .
As for your CEL bulb, have your tried replacing the bulb itself? Guage clusters dont just come 'wired wrong', but if you do suspect that, try another cluster from a friend or something.
I had the smell of unburnt gas once, along with black soot residue.
Turned out to be badly fouled plugs and a clogged Map sensor. Upon replacing all plugs and buying a new MAP sensor, it completely solved the problem.

am sorry forgot to mention my hatch had a integra cluster on it. so i swapped it for a si cluster. how would i check if my map and 02 sensor is working right? the hatches only came in cx and dx models that i know of. but anyways mine is a dx type. i read somewhere around here that the iacv needs bleeding after taking it out how would i go about doing that.

Never heard of that in my life to be honest.
When swapping IAC's, it sometimes takes a minute or two for it to kick in.
When i did mine, I just swapped it in, turned it on, the idle sat at 2200 for about 30 seconds, then slowly came down to a normal 800 rpm and stayed.
