Everything in your car is 12 volts (except the ignition) and therefore it is extremely hard to get shocked. You can go up to your battery and lick you fingers and grab both posts and nothing would happen you body resistance is normally too high.

Is this your first car? Or first winter with a car? Because winter and car equals static electricity. And therefore you get shocked quite a bit by static.

It's because it is winter I have that problem too right now, but not in the summer. It is good to shock yourself before you fill your car up with gas though

Winter has something to do with it but not all. It is probably your tires. Tires with alot of silica in them will shock you when you touch any part of the car that is grounded. The stock michelines have alot of silica in them .

Yeah my gf has a severe disliking of my Civic, because it always shocks her when she gets out. I just tell her that its the car's form of payback for always slamming the door so hard, and other abuse she causes

my civic does the same.

i thought it was static from cloth seats because it doesnt happen in my friends car with gsr leather in it. i dunno though.

parada tires are supposed to have a lot of silica in them if that theory is true.

easy trick to avoid this is when getting out of the car grab the metal part of the door until your foot is on the ground and voilia no more shock.

It's not the season, blah blah blah...

It's due to the fabric of your car seats rubbing against the materials in your clothes creating static. I've found that fleece sweaters, polyesters, and non-rubber soled shoes create lovely sparks every now and then. There's not a whole lot you can do about it, except learn to love it

I used to go out with this girl who would, honest to God, close the car door with her shoe so that she wouldn't get shocked.

its called static electricity. when you park your *** in the seat you build up energy from your clothing rubbing on the seat, producing a neg. charge. then when you touch a pos. charge you have a reaction.

Yeah, I store electricity like a battery in the wintertime. When the air gets colder, the molecules slow down. This creates more friction as you walk/drive/whatever, hence more static electricity. All of my clothes have static cling right now, even my jeans. I hate this weather....

Some interesting facts on static electricity...

ESD = Electrostatic Discharge
If you can FEEL the shock, its at least 3,000 volts of ESD
If you can HEAR the snap, its at least 9,000 volts of ESD
If you can SEE the arc, its at least 20,000 volts of ESD

You notice it more in the winter because there is less humidity. Humidity creates more resistance, therefore you don't feel it as much.

And just to let you know, most electronics can be damaged by less than 30v of ESD.

Try putting your hand on something grounded before you slide out of the cloth seat. If you don't get a shock, then you probably are right about the static.
