Yea in stock form your really not supposed to hear the VTEC kick in. Other than the above stated circumstances, your VTEC should be working fine, otherwise you would have a CEL (check engine light).

On my old motor with I/H/E, you could feel and barely hear the VTEC switch over at about 4700 rpm. Like a couple others have said, if your oil level is over one quart low, it won't switch over. If you want to hear the VTEC, try removing the upper part of the air box and you should be able to hear it. Also if it wasn't working, it would take a life time to reach redline.

The VTEC is noticeable in a stock honda EX. You just have to know what your listening for. Its not that apparent, but you can tell.
Since its a new car there will be alot of things you won't notice untill you have driven it for a while. Stock is comes in at 5500 rpm. If the car pulls good all the way thru 6800rpm then its working. Its not that it pulls harder, it just continues to pull all the way thru redline.
I would bet its working and not to worry about it.

i believe vtec engages in a y8 and z6 engine at 4800-5200 rpms depending on varying engine conditions like oil pressure, engine load, and speed.

If you can tell the difference in a groan of disappointment and a coo of pleasure from your girlfriend you should be able to detect the subtle but significantly different noises that come from your engine when VTEC engages.
The volume of VTEC is not indicative of the power output of the engine. I have the loudest VTEC crossover of anyone I know, my D16Z6 is bone stock, has 250k+ miles on it and is running open throttle body. If you want to reassure yourself that something is happening between 4000 and 5000 rpm, just lose the intake tubing for a trip around the block and give all the neighbors something to bitch about.

When my friend first got his 97 EX, we couldn't hear vtec worth a ****. I knew he had it though. We then put on a Dragon v2 intake, and the sound of his car went to pure, unadulterated evil.
First gear at WOT you can only notice sometimes, but if you hold WOT all the way through 2nd you'll hear it. If you didn't know what you were listening for it would sound like you broke something on your engine like spun a bearing or something, at least that's how I would describe it.
Intakes also get you improved throttle response, and at least more torque/HP at low end/mid RPM. You'll feel a difference. I have had a few cars where the onyl mods I did were intake; its a great place to start. It doesn't sound like an exhaust, which is good, but you'll still turn heads when you open it up
To that other question: vtec kinda sounds like sticking a piece of paper in an oscillating fan, sorda?

You should really start to hear it with an intake.
I put on an intake and exhaust on my 96 accord ex and I can here it kick in now.

One way you can detect weater or not vtec is working is if you go to radio shack and get a little LED light for about 2 dollars (make sure it has a built in resistor). There will be two wires coming out of the light. Connect the black one to a good ground and the red one to the wire coming out of the vtec solinoeid. Then you can mount this light anywhere inside of your car and be able to tell when vtec kicks in ever time. This also helps down the line if you are goin to boost your car so you can still see if vtec is working. I did it and it works great....looks cool too

I actually thought my vtec was louder with the stock airbox vs. my AEM SRI on my 98 d16y8. Probably because you could hear the engine gasping for even more air. It should be fairly noticeable, at least it was to me, but I was also used to hearing it out of my bros GSR's b17a.
Stock, mine/everyone elses kicks in around 54/5500 rpm. I'm not sure if how you verify vtec is engaging, but the LED idea sounds pretty good. Good luck in your search for vtec, y0!

I kinda wonder, because my friend just got the apexi controller and it has a set VTEC enguage point at 5500 stock. I think the oil pressure and temp only determine if it kicks in, not when.
VTEC-I has load sensing but a D16y8 won't have that.

I thought about doing that but then I thought to myself, with my luck I would end up sucking a rock or something in and destroying my engine. I'm still very temepted though.
As far as what VTEC sounds like...it depends on what engine you are listening to. In my stock y8 in 2nd gear it is just really loud growl. In my buddies 00 Si with I/H/E, it was MUCH more noticeable, and in one of my other friends GSR, I could only hear it in 3rd gear at WOT.

on the sohc you will only hear it slightly. And you won't hear it without an intake. Exhaust lobes don't change so you won't hear it thru your exhaust.

What I did on my Sunfire was I took stock pipe and went to a local performance shop and got a cone filter for $26 and shoved it on the end of the stock pipe. Cheap intake
p.s. before I did that I took 2 test runs with no filter and pipe hanging off. Just keep it high in the bay and away from the downpipe on the airbox.

Hahaha, ******. I need a damn camber kit for the front for the drop that I need/want. Plus, the fahking right rear strut stripped on the disassembly of it. So, I need to save a little money from the Christmas money I'm going to get so I can get a new strut and a camber kit. Can't find a pair of used OEM rear struts on H-T for less than $40 shipped.
Sorry for the hijack.
