axles just pop out when you hit them with a mallet
The part you want to get off, the "hub", however, will not come off when the axle is removed. You need to use a slide hammer to remove it, and then press the hub back onto the knuckle

the stud holder as you put it, is called the hub.
I've done it without pulling the axle out of the car, simply remove the knuckle from the car vie the two balljoints, and the axle will fall out of the hub.
press out the hub/bearing, split the race off the hub. Take a hammer and crack the studs hard and they will come right out. take a crappy flat lug nut and tighten the new studs in place.
Remove the snap ring that holds in the bearing, press out the bearing, press in the new bearing, lock snap ring in place, press in the hub.
at least that's what I had to do with my EG.
while you're in there it's not a bad idea to replace the lower ball joint.
