I have a 1995 honda civic dx 4dr sedan 1.5L engine. The dealer says I have an S20 Transmission is this true? IF so is this a good transaxle? Does anyone know the gear ratios of it. The main one I am concerned with is the final drive, not to be confused with fifth gear. I mean the ring and pinion gear ratio. I was thinking about getting a 4.9 ratio for it. I ran I 16.9 1/4 not bad for 1.5L non vtec couldn't get traction off the line. I wanted to change the final drive and put a LSD And Stage 3 clutch. Any suggestion with brands or experence doing this. I figured I might be able to run low 16's or even break 15 with it.

All 92-95 Civic trannies are S20's. The gears inside them however vary from model to model:
EX/Si
1st-----3.250
2nd-----1.900
3rd-----1.250
4th-----0.909
5th-----0.750 for Si HB and Del sol Si
or------0.702 for 2 dr or 4 dr sedan
Final Drive---4.250
DX/LX
1st-----3.250
2nd-----1.762
3rd-----1.172
4th-----0.909
5th-----0.702
Final Drive---4.058
CX /VX
1st-----3.250
2nd-----1.761
3rd-----1.066
4th-----0.853
5th-----0.702
Final Drive---3.250
Just adding an EX transmission can do wonders for your quarter mile times, they have been known to shave more than a half second off. As far as adding a 4.9 final drive and LSD, i'd go with an SRR 4.9 FD and a Quaife LSD. However, for both items (not including the extensive amount of tranny labor for redoing the FD and diff) you'll be spending at least $1300...which could be spent on a better go-fast item like an engine swap or turbocharger. You best bet would be to find a 92-00 Civic EX transmission and install that with a new clutch...you should see a significant increase in your performance.

yeah, any 92-00 D series tranny will work.
The 96-00 D series have steel shift forks, unlike the aluminum shift forks found in the P20A/B trannies(92-95)....I have broken my share of shift forks
THe steel shift forks also makes the gear box feel a little more solid IMO also
