how to tell vtec?
I know someone with an 89 civic which supposedly has a b16 vtec swap done in it. The valve cover says but that doesn't mean anything. Also I had it up to around 5200-5400 and I didn't hear vtec engage. Is there a way to tell if the engine has vtec or not without tearing it apart? How do you tell with taking it apart? what RPM should it engage at?

wire a LED light to ur vtec sol. to see if ut vtec is actually work...and go from there....check oil pressure...a/f and also ur ecu.. im sure theres more but i cant think of ne right now..

what does it say what kind of motor it is on the block? im pretty sure there is a stamp on the head to say but i dont know where. maybe the vtec isnt hooked up yet?

on single cams you cant hear the cross over for vtec
if he still has the cam/timing belt cover on, on the side it should read z6 or y8. i think there are more vtec engines but i forget the rest.
same thing with the block it says d16z6 or d16y8 it is a single cam vtec.
do some research i think there are other heads that have vtec as well...
if he knows what he is doing with the swap, ask him what ecu he is running it with and if its a p28 then hes got the right ecu.
i dunno what else...

there is a selenoid on the head for vtec.

Best idea yet. Besides, trying to make VTEC engauge while the car is stopped is a failed mission from the get go. VTEC won't enguage unless the car is going 20-25mph and it is above 60degrees C and a few other things too.

I think depending on the gen of the engine, the vtec should engage around 6k... so rev high, or jus pop the hood, if the valve cover is like 2 feet wide instead of like a foot, it is a dohc so therefor it most likely has vtec, n check for the selenoid, it can be in a few different spots, depending on the engine

asshat of the year award.
b18b's are "like two feet wide, dude" and don't have vtec. not all dohcs have vtec. and there are hell of alot of single cams with vtec.
basically, check for head engine codes or else check for the solenoid. if it's there. your car must be warmed up and moving more than 20mph for vtec to engage. also, you must have the correct oil pressure
do you know what ecu you are running? hopefully its not a non-vtec ecu. there could be some wiring issues.

If u read the original quote, he was askin if the engine in the car he was lookin at was a b16 like the owner said it was... therefor if its wider n can house 2 cams then its mostlikely a b16 n does have vtec. I thought the LS was vtec Oh yeah, i own a single cam vtec so i know d series can be vtec also

I disagree sir... On "STOCK" single cam motors you most likely won't here the crossover but it's very obvious on my d15b with i/h/e. Not as much as a twin cam mind you but still very obvious... It does vary from car to car as well even two cars with the same motor. Oh, and my crossover is around 4800 - 5200 rpms depending on the circumstances.

Re: how to tell vtec? (WongFeihung)
why does everyone claim u cant hear vtec on a sohc? its obvious that u can ...
anyway... check for the vtec silenoid and see if the connector is connected...
if that is good then give a test drive: vtec WILL NOT ENGAGE while your not moving without a vtec controlller. also, even many sohc motors will not pop vtec until around 5500rpms so ur limit wasnt high enough...
if worst comes to worse, check the engine code stamp.. then come back here and we will tell u if its vtec head or not

Not true at all, On my old D series vtec was louder than on my B series.

Dammit people, he's been told its a B16!!!
-check for the code on the block right beside where the tranny bolts up, to the left of the exhaust manual theres a stamp there = Engine Code. Also check for the previously mentioned vtec solenoid.
Whats with this D-Series non-sense? Most SOHC vtec motor's don't have vtec stamped on them, at least the ones i've seen, mine sure as hell didn't.
-as far as i can remember vtec on a single cam is only noticeable with an intake
-if its a b16 with a chipped p28, vtec won't kick unless its warmed up and kicking 5800 RPM
Uhm ignore the chipepd p-28 bit, i forgot its an '89 guess we gotta assume its pre-obd
