Re: volk TE-37 or rota grid (tekneek)
i dont know how to explain it properly to u ... but i will try
Rota rims look painted on and Volk or any serious rims (Spoon, Mugen, etc...) have their material made of that color... i dont know if u got what i was trying to say, i guess i can sum it up by saying Quality difference. Also the sticker is real important.

I believe the newer Ray's wheels have Rays eng. stamp on the inside part of the outer rim.

Re: volk TE-37 or rota grid (tekneek)
the valve stems will be volk aluminum valve stems with a cap thats engraved volk....
but those can be removed......but on the inside of the wheel near the hub there should be a stamping saying "rays eng"
and the inside of the rim should have on of those aluminum stickers, like he carb stickers....i know some people take them off but they are somtimes there...
i have not personally seen the finish on grids....but my volks were the powdercoated white version and it was glossy, so im not sure if that can help you

yeah i think the difference between Rota and other serious brands is the whole Powdercoating. (serious brands powdercoat, others dont)

Re: volk TE-37 or rota grid (Navid OG)
I thought the main difference between Spoons and Rotas was that the Spoons were straight 4-lugs with no other holes for fitments. Hmmm, but those spoons have holes... please clarify.

I sell Rotas at my shop and when I got my Spoon SW388 wheels I did side by side comparisons of the wheels.
Aside from the blatantly obvious color differences, there are some other differences you can look for (my pics are at home - I'm at work right now). Rotas are more of a gloss black than the Spoon's very flat anodized finish.
1. "Made in Russia" being stamped in the wheel on the backside of the hub area is the key
2. The lip on the Spoons is thinner than Rotas
3. The edges on the real Spoons will be sharp - Rota's edges are smoother and not as cleanly cut
4. Unless someone took them off, the Spoons should have the Desmond sticker with a Roman looking horse and chariot thing on the insides. Why anyone would remove these, especially with Rotas being passed as Spoons these days is beyond me. I dount anyone with a brain would.
I actually have a pic loaded up on Imagestation of that sticker:
5. Again there should be another JAWA sticker too:
6. the hole for the valvestem will be small as **** on the Spoon wheel. They are so small that normal rubber "pull through" stems won't even come close to fitting. Here's a shot of the Spoon one:
Those are the only good pics I have loaded up. I've got a good one of the "Russia" stamp on the backside too at home on my PC.
Also all I'm doing is saying how to tell them apart. i'm not saying "Rotas suck" or "Spoons rule" i'm just telling you guys some differences aside from the color and weight.

Untrue.
My Spoons have 4 lugs plus those extra holes as well:
Now they are not 8x100 where the extra holes could be used for lugs, but they are not solid like some people say they should be.
Another shot:
Mine are 100% real too:
Those 16'' Spoons posted from the A-J thing look real to me, but I've noticed on the 4-lug 16'' the grooves on the sides of the spokes make a complete circle and don't stop at all, unlike that pic of the 5-luggers.
I've honestly not seen enough 5 luggers in person to remember.

There are actually two different SW388 designs. One for 15" size and one for 16" size. The 15" design is the one that Rota copied with the Slipstream. The design you have pictured is the 16".
You can still tell differences between 15" SW388 and 15" Rotas by the differences that Tom mentioned above.
Edit: Also, newer SW388s come with a yellow "Spoon Sports" logo on one of the spokes.

15" 4 lug spoons have extra holes, not for lugs...not sure what they are for... too much room to use as lugs, wouldnt support the wheel
16" 5 lug spoons like pictured above have no extra space
