how reliable is a d-series turbo setup?
I've been hell-bent on saving up for a GSR motor and then building that up. But I've been recently (new to the imports, sorry) reading up on mini-me buildups and then slapping a turbo on it. The only way I'd do this is if it will still be pretty reliable as it has to be a daily driver. My d-series engine only has 30,000 miles on it now so if I go through with the turbo setup, it will probably have about 35-40k miles on by the time its ready. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

when i was boosted i had no problems for 2 years on my d16y7. only reason i yanked the turbo was cuz i got it used and it was already pretty worn so the miles i put on it did it in, so i decided to go a different route.

if your not running alot of boost, its ok. I'm running 7psi on my D16Z6 w/ 150k miles and its really nice. No problems, no bogging, nada. Im 100% happy with it.
As far as reliability goes, do some searching, people boost d16 daily drivers all the time. Its a great block to boost, and unless your running too much boost, should be fine!

if your looking for a kit, go with the greddy if you have the cash.
if your looking for a complete kit, go with the edelbrock. Thats one badass turbo kit for the d16. Its a chunk of change but.. its a GREAT kit.

talk to user ricey mcricerton on this board...he ran 13's in his turbo y7 hatch . One thing I would suggest is to at least get a y8 or z6 intake manifold.

yeah, after reading the extensive write-up on the mini-me, Im definately getting the EX tranny/head/intake mani first. Probably by the end of april all that will be in (if i decide to go that route). Would I have to get a different short-shifter for the EX tranny or are they basically the same with different gears?

If you have the money get the edelbrock kit. It comes w/ a manifold and everything you need to go turbo. I just received mine and it is a perfect kit.

mine lasted at 10psi for 10k miles and the only reason it blew was because of my stupidity in running 20psi. Even then it only bent a valve.

it will be as reliable as your tuning under 8psi daily driven should have no probs and since you are new to the turbo game i would run a greddy or apex kit. also instead of dropping the money on the tranny/vtec head (not that i think they are bad decisions) i would suggest putting that money into pistons/rods(about $700) and then you can run more boost safely.

you wont be changing your linkage if you just put in the ex tranny. So NO you dont need a different short shifter. Aren't mini-me setups high compression?? if that were the case a d-series would need hellacious reinforcments to run anything close to 8lbs. Get the edelbrock kit if ya got the cheddar
