Yeah, thats a really good idea, that way when something goes electrically or mechanicly wrong with your car, you dont even know about it and possibly ruin your car! Pretty cool! But hey, at least you'd have a pimp-*** shift light!
Unless of course you have a drag-only car, in which case you wouldnt be posting here asking us how to make your CEL a shift light.

This might go down as the riciest modification of all times. Why not just get a ******* shift-light that has a programmable RPM setting and call it a day? Can't wait until a CEL comes up and he doesn't know about it.

Nice!
I use my seatbelt light for.........remembering to put on my seatbelt. Oh wait, I always wear my seatbelt!
For the original poster, what you should do is get like a 4x12 pattern LED strip and mount it on the sun visor, and always drive with the visor down right in front of your face. That way when you need to shift, you'll always know, because you'll have 48 LEDs shining into your eyes! Now that would be mad tite y0!

shift lights are useful. you can always re-wire the CEL to somewhere else. the 350Z and RX-8 both come with shift lights from the factory (as did VX hatches =P). all you need to do is buy a RPM activated switch, like a shift light or MSD box, then wire it to the CEL bulb in the cluster.

Not correct. The CEL only comes on at a set RPM (programmed in the ROM).. It would not effect codes at all as it DOES NOT COME ON BELOW that point. Get it?

You honestly either didn't think about what you wrote, or have no clue about which you speak of. One or the other. I happen to have the MIL shift light on my car and it does NOT act as you, and a few others, have jokingly stated. Good job in spreading false info though!

Re: how to make your CEL a SHIFT LIGHT??? (Hybrid93Eg)
So essentially just wire it up to both the part of the ECU that sends out the CEL signal, as well as the rpm sensor/shift light control? I hope you use a diode, cause sending 12v into somewhere its supposed to come out of = FUN STUFF.

My god. Again, you have no idea what your speaking of. The MIL shift light IS programmable to specific points. Its just like any other "chip" you would put in your ECU. So long as you can burn chips, you can change the point at which the light comes on. It WILL NOT effect the MIL light either in terms of being able to read codes. You think the light comes on and stays on regardless of RPMS? No. Think a little about what you said. Its JUST A SHIFT LIGHT, it GOES OFF after rpms fall below a specific point. It DOES NOT erase codes or anything either by using it. So how the hell is this going to "prevent" someone from getting codes again? Come on, there is 3 of you to come up with ideas now. Please explain.

My god. Where do you people come up with this stuff? Why would you need to wire jack into anything? Its a simple routine. You tell the ecu "If you see this rpm XXXX then turn the MIL on"... Get it? No wiring is needed.

Maybe I can make this easy to understand, because you people apparently aren't really thinking about things before you reply...
The shift light will only come on AT OR ABOVE a specified RPM.
Does it make sense now how you will know the difference? Its simple. The light comes on, you shift, it goes off.. OBVIOUSLY that wasn't a code.
The light comes on, you shift, its still on. Oh my god! You have a code.

Re: how to make your CEL a SHIFT LIGHT??? (Hybrid93Eg)
oooh so you are saying that this CEL shift light is pointless since you already know what rpms to shift at anyway....damn i thought you had a good point for a second.
