How to make car beep when lights are left on?
I have a 1995 Civic Ex and want my car to beep indicating that I have left my headlights on.
Anybody know how to do this?

Bah there was a site for doing this to a Del Sol, and i did it on my 92 hatch over break. Its really easy, just a 5 dollar relay from radio shack and some wiring...... The site is gone though.... I might still have the directions though, if i find them i'll scan and post them.

I believe I have seen a thing at wal-mart in the automotive section that you could use. Like a headlight left on reminder kit? I saw it by the toggles and butt conectors. Or you could buy on off ebay too.

OK

This is assuming you have above average intelligence.

Tools you will need include:

Test Light
Wire Strippers
Soldering Iron
Wire Crimpers
Razor Blade or Olfa Knife or Box Knife

Materials include:

Some sections of wire at least 18 guage
Some female "speaker" terminals
A Bosch (or equaivalent) 12 Volt 30 Amp Relay
Some kind of beeper or buzzer that works on 12 Volts or higher
Electrical Tape - Dont be cheap buy 3M
Some Butt Connectors - Red or Blue (indicates guage)
Ring Terminals
Self tapping screws

First you will need to locate the parking light wire. You are actually trying to indicate headlights, but if your headlights are on your parking lights are too. You will ground one end of the test light and "probe" around for the wire. You can switch the parking lights on and off to be sure you got the right one.

You should be looking under the drivers side dash. Places the check are at the bundle of wires that run into the steering column and near the fusebox. If all else fails you can tap directly into the parking light wire and run it into the car. I dont suggest this. You could pull the parking light and look at what color the wires are and then look for one of those colors inside under the dash. If you cant find it you probably couldnt hook it up anyway...

OK, so you found the wire...you did find the wire, right? Cut a slice into the insulation of the wire about 1" long and peel the insulating jacket off. Attach one of your sections of wire here about 1 foot long. Either solder it and tape it, tape it, or if all else fails use a butt connector (which I am not a fan of, soldering is best). Make sure your parking lights are off at this point. Now crimp one of your speaker terminals on the end of this wire, along with another short jumper wire, as indicated by the red wire and jumper in the diagram.

Now take another piece of wire, perferably black and connect this to ground with either a self tapping screw or use an existing screw.

Look on the bottom of the relay and make the following connections. I could be wrong with the labeling of the numbers but it really doesnt matter, its just the labels. The main thing is dont use the center pin on the relay, as it wont work and there is a chance for the whole thing to short out if the center pin touches metal.

At this point if you cant follow the diagram you are fugged...plus I am tired of typing.

If anyone else needs a custom relay design just IM. Good Luck!!!!

the method i ended up using required a relay from radio shack, and 4 wires with connectors to attach to the relay. Thats it. It hooks into the keys in the ignition warning beeper. I just have to figure out if i kept those darn instructions.

Well, if you DONT leave your keys in the ignition, but DO leave your headlights on, then your buzzer wont buzzzzzz...

You DON'T need a relay, just get one of those $2 kits from walmart or wherever. They tell you exactly in your fusebox where to put it.

Wrong, it just makes use of the buzzer. It will buzz if the keys are in, it will buzz if just the lights are on.

Read this thread. On the second page I have pics and an audio file of the buzzer I got from Radio Shack.

The easiest way of doing this, is to buy a 12 volt pulsing piezo buzzer from Radio Shack part#273-066a, about $5.00, an inline fuse holder and a 3Amp fuse.
Now to install this buzzer. First ,you will see that the buzzer has 2 wires, a black and red wire. Solder your fuse holder to the red wire. This red wire will tap into your parkink light fuse, that way it will sound if you leave your parking lights on. The black wire will be tapped into your wiper fuse. Now insert your fuse, turn your key to acc, turn on your parking lights, and turn your key to the off position, if done correctly your buzzer should go off. Secure your buzzer to the vehicle and your done.

When you say "go off" do you mean the buzzer should *start* making a noise or *quit* making a noise? If it should *Stop* making a noise, it would be useless.

The idea of this project is to notify you when you leave your lights on when you leave the car, which I am assuming that you will turn your ignition off and remove the keys.

The headlight fuse should show power on both sides of the fuse with the key on or off. I believe it runs through the headlight switch AFTER the fuse, but I could be wrong as I havent checked.

Go to WalMart and look for a headlight indicator. $5-$7 and you just put it in your fuse box I think...

Thanks everyone!!
Found it in WallyWorld aka Wal-mart for $6.79, installed in like 20 minutes.
Hardest thing to do, which really still wasn't to difficult was to find a fuse that would shut off the buzzing if the lights were on while the car was on. If I didn't do this anytime the lights where on, whether the car was on or off, it would make the buzzing noise.

I connected the red wire to the parking lights fuse/interior dash lights fuse, and the white wire to the SRS fuse.

Works fine, thanks guys.
