How do you protect exhaust?

Is there any precautions I can take for protecting my exhaust pipe form rusting..FOr example would painting it with a high temp paint work to keep the rust away?

paint it with high temp paint...that makes more sense to me than putting tar on it..

prep would be sanding it down with paper or i used a sanding "sponge/brick". once the surface is rougher and CLEAN, just paint it. Couple coats should work.
