Default How do I make my wife's 98 Civic LX automatic faster?

ok guys. I was a huge honda guy when i was like 14-15 then i bought a SPEC-V sentra and a SE-R altima. Three days ago i bought my wife a 98 LX civic 4-door and she wants it faster lol. I was lookin to do the "mini me swap" and slap on headers, intake, and port and polish. Just wondering what else i could possibly do? i wanna shoot for a good safe WHP that will make the car quick but not blow up the tranny. Its automatic......she cant drive a stick yet. I would like to shoot for atleast 150-160WHP if thats possible on stock d16y7 tranny. Thanks guys!

also if there is any suggested replacements i should do or anything would be much appretiated! Im not to familiar with civic's just know what the engines are capable of (b16's b18's k20's) never looked at d16's. also with the mini me swap i will be putting on APR head studs and also a new head gasket. Any other sugested replacements since ill have it torn down? Cars got 73k miles

Do you have a budget?

A mini-me swap isn't going to give you 150-160WHP.
Header & Intake isn't going to give you any noticeable power.

Does your wife want to learn how to drive stick? You could always swap the engine.

I don't think you'll get those numbers on a stock d series without a turbo.

dammit lol. Well. looks like ill just teach her stick in my car and maybe do a d16y8 manual swap if i can. And budget isnt really a problem. Tax season is coming up and i should be looking at $3000+ but ATM next pay check imma round up all the parts ill need for mini me swap. IS there a big difference from stock to mini me swap? Cuz 106hp goes NO WHERE lol. I just dont wanna turbo it and sit at 160hp and it still be "slow" idk what hp is fast for a honda. My altima usually smokes the **** outta the honda's here but only a select few that are boosted. I just dont wanna make it look like a ricer that was a money pit. I can drop 3 grand into my altima and be sitting at 280WHP. so just as long as im not wasting time and money.

Bragging about smoking an economy car isn't much to brag about.
Mini-me. No power. Bolt-ons. No power. Y8 swap. No power.
Boost the stock engine and swap in a manual transmission or swap in a larger engine. $3k to boost a D-series sounds like the way to go.

THIS.

You could boost the d16y7 and use the stock internals and make your WHP goal. Swapping a different engine, such as a GSR (b18c) will give you 180hp stock. (hmotorsonline.com has complete changeover for $3000 plus shipping)

It's your choice, either swap to a DOHC or Boost.

A mini-me swap isn't worth it.

My vote is boost, they're fun.

Start teaching her how to drive a stick!

Look into a LS or B20 swap. That combined with a GSR/type r, or even a b16 tranny could be just what she needs.

You've got some time, so do your homework. Look at people's threads, see what they have, and like.

The 5sd convo is the hardest part of it........

Putting the b18 really isn't that difficult, but, it's your first time it may be a little difficult. Do you have any mechanicly inclined buddys?

i want to keep the sleeper look. im not even going to put rims or anything on it. There is a 93 hatch here that looks BONE stock. you cant see the intercooler but its got a b18c1 with a t3 and it SPANKED my buddies 410WHP EVO10. thats the look im goin for. but its for my wife. so im not trying to throw her in something thats a dam rocket lol. Ill start working with her to drive a stick. I think my clutch is starting to go in my altima though lol. At the cruise last night my **** was grinding into 2nd gear.....with TC off. So i dont need her totally killing it lol. But Thank you guys for all your input! b20's are HELLA cheap $500? all id need is the b18 tranny and that would be solid. Still kinda interested in a boosted d series though. like i said its for my wife. So as long as its not gunna torque steer all over the place and be to snappy that will be good. Also whats the safe boost range on a stock d16y7?

This is true, both those engines are good. If you don't want to boost, then a b series will probably be your best bet.

mmm j32. thats like, 260hp?

Look into go-autoworks.com for some of their "boosting kits".

Do you want to go turbo or do a NA (naturally aspirated, if you don't know) build?

That answer will help us help you more.

$3k. Build the block. Turbo. Manual transmission. Clutch. It's doable and would net you very decent power.

I think most people stay under/around 10psi on stock internals for d series.

PSI doesn't mean anything. Tell your friends.
200 horsepower is safe for a stock D-series.

Well im looking for something that will be a reliable Daily driver for my wife. It doesnt have to be boosted. I think boost would scare the **** outta her lol. And j32's fully bolted slapped into a civic put down like 300WHP its NUTS. I seen em in person just destroy **** lol. Only thing is i dont wanna have to cut the hood and everything.

Yeah they're pretty sick.

Look at B series from hmotorsonline (very reputable) or look on your local craigslist.

Don't buy engines off of Craigslist unless they're still in the car running.

Then you shoudn't have any problems. Pizza/beer normally does it for my friends. lol

Take a look at b20's on Hmotorsonline.com. When she get's good, you can even convert it b20/vtec and give that little sentra a run for it's money.

Quick Reply: How do I make my wife's 98 Civic LX automatic faster?
