hey everyone, i have been told that my cars problem could be a faulty TPS or a Map sensor, anyways, how do i go about checking them?

</TD></TR></TABLE>it will not rev past 4500 rpm, it isnt hitting a rev limiter either, its boggy when i start getting up to 3500 rpm and 4500 and if i press the gas very slowly it can reach all the way to 4500 then the rev's just drop back down

unplug the map sensor and see if the problem persists if so its your TPS.

Get a voltmeter and check the pins at the tps.Should have gnd/5volts/and "signal" wire.
While pinning the gnd and signal,have someone press the gas slowly and see if the voltage rises proportionately with no "dead spots" where there is no voltage.

For your map sensor,hook up a vacuum pump to the nipple. draw a vacuum while checking for voltage and see if it changes also.

thanks man, thats what i wanted to hear any other way of checking the map semnsor tho, i dont have a vacuum pump

i was also under the assumption correct me if I'm wrong, that Tps's tend to give idling problems at take off. Not once you get moving i might be wrong though. ?? Check the CEL codes and look if you get a malfunction code.

yah im currently toying with my tps. had a bouncing idle and would also hold at 2k during warm ups if i started driving and then put down the clutch. you should read .5v and 4.5v at closed and wot. i think in the sticky it says .5 at closed and 4.5v at wot but i was getting the exact opposite. maybe i was testing across the wrong wires. you don't have to have the car on, just put it in like II and then push the throttle rotor thing open.

Sounds a lot like the car is running in limp mode.

tis not, because its not hiotting a rev limiter, i can only make it rev to 4500 if i slowly press the pedal down

Do you have the TPS and MAP sensor plugs switched? Easy mistake.

nope, ive already checked al that, plus my map sensor is on the firewall anyways

go to a local pick and save junkyard and grab yourself as many of 88-95 civic MAP sensors as you can, the older 4th gen MAP's are attached to a metal plate that also has the evap purge solenoid on it, just unbolt it from the firewall and rip the evap off and stick it in your pocket.
I did this with my buddy when his MAP was faulty. His car idled at 4K (but this was b/c of the FITV, the wax peice was completely unthreaded) and ran like ****, you could smell unburned gas through his exhaust and it smoked pretty bad. Too bad Keswick is so far from hamilton b/c i have like 3 extras.
Maybe a problem with the distributor. Get out the helms manual, for the specs, and your multimeter and have a fun filled afternoon, its nice outside today up here in ontario canada.

my car did something similar to that also it would only rev up if i hardly gave it any gas but my timing was way off i just retimed it and it runs decent i still have a boggyness to the car but it runs a lot better

to check tps just unplug it when off, turn it on and see if problem persist not just at idle, drive it and see if the lag and drop off are still ther. Ive had multiple experiences with bad tps. Then plug back in dont run too long with it off.
