you need to have a way to vent the tank is all, why remove it anyway? gas isn't cheap, and all you are doing is making it easier for it to evaporate out of the tank. The system just lets the tank vapors burn in the engine, which certainly doesn't cost anything as far as horsepower

there are probably easier ways, by the time you add a way to vent the tank etc, you won't save much weight. If you want to remove the system, just go with a fuel cell, I wouldn't want a regular tank on a track anyway

As someone who just removed his evap canister and sold it, since I don't need it for emissions with my B swap...Just leave it in. You're looking at less than 2 lbs from the canister. If you still have AC, start with that. Remove the fan, compressor, condenser, and canister. If you can still take more weight off, take the cooler core (under the dash) out. That'll free up something like 50-70 lbs right there.

yep, the AC is extremely heavy, by the time you remove the compressor, it's heavy bracket, the evaporator, condenser, lines, relays etc, you save a lot of weight, if this is going to be a strictly road race car, take out the dash, and remove the entire heater box, and everything attached to it, then put the dash back in, or construct a basic dash, if your class doesn't require a full one

He said he's running STL. Keep in mind that my source for these rules is 3 years old, and SCCA doesn't exactly make finding their rules easy for someone running on no sleep in three days, so it's old (and possibly slightly wrong) information, but it's a starting point:

Weight with driver 2399 Updating and backdating between years is legal
Brakes - must use stock brakes
ABS – only from the car it was designed for.
Engine (N/A only)
11:1 Maximum Compression
No head porting
.425 maximum lift cams

I'm working on downloading the CURRENT rule books right now (4 different books, until I find what I'm looking for), so if I find it, I'll update this, or post again.

The curb weight according to Edmunds is 2601. Add 170 for a roughly average adult male, and that gives the OP roughly 370 pounds to play with. That's the AC components, heater core bypass, rear and passenger seats, spare and hardware, and door cards. The dash might push it over that, but could be added back in via roll cage, custom dash, and/or corner weights (if allowed).

Yeah, I'm gonna dig through the rule books and see what's kosher.

So, the short definition of STL

The intent of the Super Touring category is to allow competition of
production-based vehicles, at a higher level of preparation, using DOTapproved
tires. Vehicles used in this category must be identifiable with
the vehicles offered for sale to the public and available through the
manufacturer’s distribution channels in the US. No chassis or engines
older than 1985 will be eligible, except that model runs that began
before 1985 are eligible (e.g., if a model was produced in 1983-1988,
the 1983 and 1984 cars are eligible). The SCCA does not guarantee the
competitiveness of any car.

...

Super Touring Light (STL) is a small-bore “tuner” class for reciprocating
piston engines of displacements of 2.0 liters and under. STL encompasses
a lower level of allowed modifications compared to STU. As with STU,
spec lines are not required for STL eligibility; unless otherwise specified,
any vehicle meeting the model year and engine displacement limits is
eligible for this class.

...
Getting into the depth of what modifications are allowed, as far as exterior goes, basically, it has to stay stock. Under panels can be added, but they have to be 3" or more off the ground, and cannot extend past the front axle. A front splitter can be added, but it must be one piece (specifies no canards allowed), and it can only have up to 4 connecting rods, cannot extend more than 2" off the front of the car as looking down, and also must be a minimum of 3" off the ground. Closeout panels are allowed behind the grille only. Side skirts, wings, OEM difusers, blah blah blah no one cares...

Aha, here's the part we care about. Page 577, starting section E.

E. Interior
1. The following items must be removed: tool kit, spare tire, supplemental
restraint systems (SRS) and passive restraint systems.
2. The following items may also be removed:
Headliner, sun visor, carpeting, carpet pad and/or insulation, soundproofing,
OEM seats, all trim except the dashboard, heating and
air conditioning systems, window winding mechanisms, central
locking systems, audio system, and any other systems fitted to the
original car solely for the comfort of the driver and/or passengers.

...

6. Stock dash/instrument panel cover (dash pad) must be used.
Original instruments/gauges may be replaced, or supplemented,
with additional engine monitoring gauges. Accessories, lights and
switches may be added or removed. Box-type extensions from the
dash pad may be used to mount switches and controls, in the areas
where the OEM insert panels were mounted, so that they more
easily accessible to the driver. Audio and video systems may be
removed.

...

8. Dash pad modification – It is permitted to modify the dash pad in
order to run the roll cage tubes through the dash area as long as
the dash pad is modified only enough for roll cage fitment. If necessary,
the dash pad may be parted to ease installation around roll
cage. Any such parting shall be done in such a way as to minimize
the appearance that they have been separated once pieces of dash
pad are installed.

F. Chassis
1. All cars shall have the OEM rear package shelf and/or rear seat
back support structure installed
if applicable. As an alternative, a
metallic close out panel may be installed that simulates the rear
package shelf and/or the rear seat back support structure if applicable.
If a close out panel is used to clean up the appearance of the
rear package shelf and/or rear seat bulkhead in conjunction with
the OEM structure, the close out panel material is free.

...

6. The OEM firewall between the cockpit and engine compartment
shall be intact to prevent the passage of flames from the engine
compartment to the cockpit. Any holes in the firewall must be of
the minimum size for the passage of controls and wires, and must
be completely sealed.
So there ya have it. The dash has to stay in, but you can gut it and strip it. It just has to physically be there.

For anyone wanting to read for themselves, and for anyone in the future who might find this thread via searching, you can find the rule book these quotes were pulled from HERE. It is the 2014 rule book, December revision.

just pull out the dash, gut everything behind it, and put it back in, not sure on that year if it uses the framework in the center that goes around the heater box, if it does it's a simple matter to put it back in
