hot tanking intaking manifold (getting rid of carbon)
Will hot tanking an intake manifold get rid of all the carbon crud in the egr passageway?
The EGR cleaning ports on a '93 VX are welded shut (at least mine are). I picked up another intake manifold today for $40 (is that a reasonable price?) and was going to drill into the welded ports, but thought: why not hot tank the manifold or submerge it in a vat of degreaser.
Is there any other ways to clean the passageways?
Other ideas:
* Buy a gun barrel cleaner brush and have at it at the EGR passageways.
* Use a high pressure wash and blast away at it. I have one of those low end high pressure spray so I'm not sure this will work that well.
Is there a way to test how clogged the egr passageway is? I have a leakdown tester - perhaps I can somehow use it to see if air can get past the passageways.
I'm surprise I don't see much posting about the welded egr cleaning ports. I think its due to the fact that:
* the Civic VX is the only 92-95 civic that has an EGR system and it might be the only one from 92 to current (correct me if I am wrong).
* People who want to buy VXs are regular people who want to get good gas mileage so if they run into EGR issues most will trade it in for another car or sell it to some kids who will mod and are more diy'ers.
* Other people who buy these cars swap out the engine so any EGR issue is moot for them.

Vat of degreaser + pipe cleaners will clean it out nice if it really is pretty gunked up. Just make sure your only cleaning the bare manifold, dont get any sensors wet.
